Clouded Leopard sighted in Nagaland

  • A team of researchers have recorded photographic evidence of clouded leopards at an elevation of 3,700 metres along the Indo-Myanmar border in Nagaland.
  • The tree-climbing clouded leopard (Neofelisnebulosa), is the smallest of the large wild cats and is categorised as ‘Vulnerable’ under the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
  • There are previous reports of high-elevation records of clouded leopards, but in state-protected areas, including Sikkim, Bhutan and Nepal.

  • Authorities in Kazakhstan declared a nationwide state of emergency and promised a tough crackdown as mass unrest plunged the country into chaos.
  • Long seen as one the most stable of the ex-Soviet republics of Central Asia, energy-rich Kazakhstan was facing its biggest crisis in decades after angry protesters over rising fuel prices stormed government buildings.
  • Thousands took to the streets in the country’s biggest city Almaty and in the western province of Mangystau, saying the price rise was unfair given oil and gas exporter Kazakhstan’s vast energy reserves.

Hong Kong bars flight from India

  • Hong Kong reimposed some of its toughest Covid restrictions, banning flights from eight countries including India until January 21.
  • The travellers from Australia, Canada, France, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, the UK and the US, including via transit.
  • Hong Kong also reimposed tough restrictions on social activities, including a 6-PM curfew on all dine-in services.

Grammy awards postponed indefinitely

  • The annual Grammy Awards Show has been postponed indefinitely due to the uncertainty surrounding the Omicron variant of COVID-19.
  • The show had been scheduled to take place at an arena in downtown Los Angeles and broadcast live on the CBS network on Jan. 31.
  • The 2021 Grammy awards also were postponed because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The ceremony was staged in March instead of January.

Shillong Chamber Choir founder Neil Nongkynrih passes away

  • Shillong Chamber Choir founder and noted music composer Neil Nongkynrihpassed away in Mumbai. He was 51.
  • In 2010, he led his choir to win India’s Got Talent, catapulting the unit to national and international stardom.
  • They performed for former US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama during their India visit.
  • The Choir’s rendition of “VandeMataram” was played during the telecast of Chandrayaan II’s launch. In 2015, Neil was awarded the Padma Shri – India’s fourth-highest civilian honour.
