Journalist Vinod Dua passes away

  • Veteran journalist Vinod Dua passed away. He was 67. Dua was a pioneer in broadcast Hindi journalism with stints in Doordarshan and NDTV.
  • Mr Dua was honoured with several awards for his contribution to journalism. In 1996, he became the first electronic media journalist to win the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Award.
  • He was also awarded the Padma Shri for Journalism in 2008 by the Government of India. In June 2017, for his lifetime achievement in the field of journalism, Mumbai Press Club awarded him the RedInk Award.

New butterfly species discovered in Sikkim

  • ZographetusDzonguensis, a butterfly species new to science, was found at Dzongu in Sikkim, a stronghold of the indigenous Lepchas of Sikkim.
  • The team of researchers who discovered the species have proposed the English name ‘Chocolate-bordered Flitter’ as it has a chocolate coloured border around both the wings.
  • Chinese species are similar to the Chocolate-bordered Flitter in general colouration and appearance but have slightly different spotting patterns.
  • The chocolate-brown spots on the hindwing of the Sikkim species are smaller, and the white spots on the forewing are also more sharply defined.

India and Russia to sign a deal on AK-203 riffle

  • The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) has given final approval for a deal with Russia to manufacture over six lakh AK-203 assault rifles in India.
  • The deal estimated at over ?5,000 crore is scheduled to be signed on December 6 during the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to India.
  • AK-203 rifles will replace INSAS rifles inducted over three decades back. They have an effective range of 300 m and are lightweight, robust and easy-to-use modern assault rifles.

Ajaz Patel becomes third person to take all 10 wickets in an innings of a Test match

  • New Zealand’s Ajaz Patel, on December 4, became the third player to take all 10 wickets in an innings. This happened during the second day of the second Test against India at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
  • The other two international players are England’s Jim Laker and India’s Anil Kumble.
  • Jim Laker achieved this feat against Australia in 1956. Jim Laker took 19 wickets in that Test match.
  • In 1999, Anil Kumble took all the 10 wickets against Pakistan in New Delhi.

Former Chief Minister of unified Andhra Pradesh K Rosaiah passes away

  • Former Governor of Tamil Nadu and former Chief Minister of the unified State of Andhra Pradesh KonijetiRosaiah passed away in Hyderabad.
  • Rosaiah was one of the most senior Congress leaders and had served in the Cabinets of several Chief Ministers. He had a record in placing the budgets on the floor of Assembly as Finance Minister.
  • He started his political career as a member of the Legislative Council in 1968. He was later elected as MLA from Chirala constituency.
