Army memorial to be inaugurated by Army chief Naravane

  • Army Chief Gen. Manoj Naravane will inaugurate an Indian Army memorial in the Italian town of Cassino during an official visit to U.K. and Italy from July 5-8.
  • Italy has pushed for a central role for India in the European Union’s Indo-Pacific Initiative which is congruent with India’s own vision for the region.
  • U.K. considers India as a key pillar in its Indo-Pacific strategy and has put forward several proposals for deepening defence technology cooperation including through co-development of technologies.

Sirisha Bandla becomes second Indian-born woman to fly into space

  • Andhra Pradesh-born astronaut Sirisha Bandla will be flying to space with UK billionaire and founder of the Virgin Galactic company Richard Branson on July 11.
  • Bandla will be taking care of the researcher's experience on the Unity22 mission. She will be one of the six space travellers aboard 'VSS Unity' of Virgin Galactic, scheduled to take off to space from New Mexico alongside the founder of Virgin Galactic Richard Branson.
  • Bandla will become the second India-born woman to fly into space after Kalpana Chawla. Rakesh Sharma and Sunita Williams were the other Indians who went into space prior to Bandla.

Mithali Raj becomes highest run scorer across all formats in cricket

  • Mithali Raj surpassed former England cricketer Charlotte Edwards' record to reach the milestone. Edwards had scored 10,273 international runs across formats and Mithali needed just 12 runs coming into the third ODI to surpass Charlotte.
  • In March this year, Mithali became the first woman batter to complete 7,000 runs in ODIs.The 38-year-old is already the most-capped ODI player in the history of women's cricket.
  • She is also the first Indian woman to complete 10,000 runs across all formats. Mithali is only the second woman to reach 10,000 runs in international cricket.

Pushkar Dhami sworn in as Chief minister of Uttarakhand

  • Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Pushkar Singh Dhami took oath as the eleventh chief minister of Uttarakhand, a day after he was elected as the leader of the BJP's legislature party.
  • BJP MLAs Satpal Maharaj, Harak Singh Rawat, Bansidhar Bhagat, Yashpal Arya, Bishan Singh Chuphal, Subodh Uniyal, Arvind Pandey and Ganesh Joshi were also sworn in as ministers in the new state cabinet.
  • Dhami is a lawmaker from the Khatima assembly constituency and is the youngest chief minister of Uttarakhand, which came into existence in November 2000 after being carved out of Uttar Pradesh.

Elgar Parishad case accused Stan Swamy dies

  • Jesuit priest Stan Swamy, an accused in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case, has died in hospital where he was being treated. He was 84.
  • Swamy was admitted to the private hospital on May 29 from the Taloja prison following the HC's order on a petition filed by him, seeking medical attention as he was then suffering from COVID-19 and Parkinson's disease.
  • The cause of the death is pulmonary infection, Parkinson's disease and post COVID-19 complications. Swamy was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in October 2020.
