WTO mulling intellectual property waiver for vaccines

  • The WTO’s General Council was taking up a temporary waiver for intellectual property protections that South Africa and India first proposed in October.
  • The idea has gained support in the developing world and among some progressive lawmakers in the West. However, the move has faced resistance from many countries with influential pharmaceutical industries.
  • The issue has become more pressing with a surge in cases in India, the world's second-most populous country and a key producer of vaccines.

Mamata Banerjee sworn in as the Chief Minister for third consecutive time

  • Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee took oath as chief minister of Bengal for the third time after returning with a thumping majority.
  • Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar administered her the oath of office and secrecy at a low-key ceremony at Raj Bhawan. Banerjee took the oath in Bengali language.
  • Mamata Banerjee won a landslide victory in the Bengal election to secure a third straight term. The Trinamool won 213 of 292 seats while its strongest rival, BJP, finished second with 77 seats.

SC declares Maratha quota law unconstitutional

  • A five-judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court has unanimously declared Maharashtra reservation benefits to the Maratha community as unconstitutional.
  • The Bench found there was no exceptional circumstances or extraordinary situation in Maharashtra which required the Maharashtra government to break the 50% ceiling limit.
  • The Supreme Court struck down the findings of the Justice N.G. Gaikwad Commission which led to the enactment of Maratha quota law.
  • The Supreme Court held that a separate reservation for the Maratha community violates Articles 14 (right to equality) and 21 (due process of law).

New species of Shrew discovered in Andaman &Nicobar

  • Scientists from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) have discovered a new species of insectivorous mammal, a white-toothed shrew, from Narcondam Island of the Andaman and Nicobar group of islands.
  • The species Crociduranarcondamica is a new addition to the list of mammals found in the country.
  • Shrews are small and mouse-like mammals, and they live in sub-leaf stratum in the forests. Insects are the primary diet of these animals.

Children’s author Subhadra Sen Gupta passes away

  • Popular children's author and Sahitya Akademi Bal Sahitya Puraskar 2015 winner, Subhadra Sen Gupta passed away due to Covid-19.
  • In a career spanning over 30 years, she penned more than 60 books for children and was best-known for her simple, interesting and informative history books for kids.
  • During her lifetime, Sen Gupta won many prestigious awards for her works, including: the Bal Sahitya Puraskar by the Sahitya Akademi in 2015, the White Raven Award at the Bologna Children's Book Fair, and more recently the Big Little Book Award in 2020.
