QUAD countries to hold summit for the first time

  • The leaders of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue or Quad are set to hold their first summit in a virtual format this month.
  • The Quad is very central to the United States and other members. It is said to be a very important step to counter Chinese aggression in the region.
  • The dialogue was first initiated in 2007 by the then Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe but lost support. The group re-emerged in 2017 when leaders of the grouping met.
  • Quad is seen very suspiciously by China which has termed it "Asian NATO",  something that has been dismissed by the grouping.

Haryana implements 75% reservation for locals in private sector

  • The Haryana government has notified the act implementing 75% reservation for local people in private jobs with a monthly salary ceiling of ?. 50,000.
  • The act extends to the whole of the State and it will be valid for ten years and applies to all the Companies, Societies, Trusts, Limited Liability Partnership firms, Partnership Firm and any person employing ten or more persons.
  • The Bill defines local candidates as those belonging to the state. For the residence status, a person should be born in Haryana or have lived there for at least 15 years.
  • Only 10 percent of the recruitment by a company needs to be from the district in which it is located, the rest of the quota can be filled from other districts in the state.

IISc among top 100 natural science universities

  • The Indian Institute of Science has entered into the top 100 in the natural sciences category of the QS World University Rankings.
  • No Indian University is in the top 100 for Arts and Humanities. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), which has been ranked 159th and is the l best performing university in this subject.
  • For Life Sciences and Medicine, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) ranked 248th worldwide.
  • Delhi University has been ranked best among Indian institutes for Social Sciences and Management, followed by IIT Bombay (232) and IIT Delhi (241).
  • Indian B-schools to be featured in this category include Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad (292) and IIM Bangalore (303).
  • The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021 cover a total of 51 disciplines, grouped into five broad subject areas. Rankings are compiled annually to help students identify the leading universities in a particular subject.

Chinese defence budget to cross $200 billion

  • China’s defence budget will for the first time cross $200 billion after the government announced a 6.8% hike in its spending for 2021.
  • The announcement was made during the session of National People’s Congress (NPC), the Communist Party-controlled legislature.
  • The hike is only fraction raise from the 6.6% increase announced in 2020 amid the pandemic, which was the lowest increase in many years.
  • This will take China’s defence spending to more than four times India’sbudget. India’s budget had announced a modest 1.48% hike in total defence spending.
  • China’s defence spending has in recent years has tried to reflect the modernisation of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).

Pacaya volcano erupts

  • Pacaya volcanoes in central American country of Guatemala has erupted, spewing volcanic material in the air.
  • The volcano erupted for the first time 23,000 years ago. It is an active volcano, which calls for continuous vigilance by the meteorological department to predict its eruption.
  • The Pacaya volcano shows a very high level of activity, which has generated a strombolian type eruption, with strong explosions.
