World’s 1st case of Cornonavirus infecting dog

  • A media report is doing the rounds on social media which stated that a pomeranian has been diagnosed with coronavirus after getting infected by its owner in Hong Kong.
  • The authorities have quarantined the pet dog after its nasal and oral samples tested "weak positive" three times for the virus.
  • New measures put in place by Hong Kong's government last Friday mean all pets infected with the coronavirus must be quarantined for 14 days. 

Earth covered by global ocean billions of years ago

  • Earth may have been covered by a global ocean that turned the planet into a “water world” more than three billion years ago, according to a study published in Nature Geoscience.
  • The findings could help scientists to better understand where and how single-cell organisms first emerged on Earth.
  • According to the paper, the origin and evolution of Earth’s biosphere were shaped by the physical and chemical histories of the oceans.
  • Marine chemical sediments and altered ocean crust preserve a geochemical record of these histories. 

Freedom in the world 2020 report

  • India has become one of the world’s least free democracies, according to a global survey.
  • The Freedom in the World 2020 report ranks India at the 83rd position, along with Timor-Leste and Senegal.
  • India’s score fell by four points to 71, the worst decline among the world’s 25 largest democracies this year.
  • The annulment of autonomy and the subsequent shutdown of Kashmir, the National Register of Citizens and the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, as well as the crackdown on mass protests have been listed as the main signs of declining freedom in the report.

Sunil Joshi appointed chairman of BCCI selection committee

  • BCCI's Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) named former India left-arm spinnerSunil Joshi as the new chairman of the senior national selection committee and also picked ex-pacer Harvinder Singh for the five-member panel.
  • Joshi will replace MSK Prasad from the south zone while Harvinder will replace former central zone selector Gagan Khoda.
  • Joshi played 15 Tests, 69 ODIs and 160 First Class matches for Karnataka while Singh played three Tests, 16 ODIs and 109 FC games for Railways.

India enters finals of ICC women’s T20 world cup

  • The India women’s cricket team progressed to their maiden final in the Women’s T20 World Cup after their semi-final against England at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) was washed out without a ball being bowled.
  • With no reserve day allotted, India entered the final as they topped their group, by maintaining a clean record in the preliminary stage of the tournament.
  • India will face the winners from the second semi-final between South Africa and Australia in the final of the tournament.
