First US woman to command nuclear submarine

  • Capt Amy Bauernschmidt became the first woman to lead a nuclear carrier in US Navy history. She will captain USS Abraham Lincoln.
  • Bauernschmidt previously served as the Abraham Lincoln’s executive officer from 2016 to 2019 and took over command from CaptWalt Slaughter.
  • Bauernschmidt previously served as the commanding officer of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 70 and the amphibious transport dock San Diego.

Captain HarpreetChandi becomes first Indian woman to make solo trek to South Pole

  • Captain HarpreetChandi, a 32-year-old Indian-origin British Sikh Army officer and physiotherapist has created history by becoming the first woman of colour to complete a solo unsupported trek to the South Pole.
  • Capt. Chandi announced her history-making feat on her live blog after travelling 700 miles with all of her kit and battling temperatures of minus 50 degrees Celsius.
  • As part of a Medical Regiment in the northwest of England, Capt. Chandi’s primary role is to organise and validate training for medics in the Army as Clinical Training Officer.

Karnataka’s new LNG terminal to come up at Mangaluru

  • The government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Singapore-based LNG Alliance Company for setting up the State’s first LNG Terminal in Mangaluru.
  • The terminal will be set up in association with New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) with an investment of ?2,250 crore.
  • The project will come up as part of the Union Government’s plan to boost the alternative fuel market to achieve net zero carbon by 2070.

North Korea tests new ballistic missile

  • North Korea fired what appeared to be a ballistic missile into the sea, South Korea and Japan said, in the first such launch by Pyongyang this year.
  • In the decade since Kim Jong Un took power, North Korea has seen rapid progress in its military technology at the cost of international sanctions.
  • The nuclear-armed nation’s first apparent weapons launch of 2022 followed a year of major arms tests despite the severe economic hardship during the coronavirus pandemic.

China builds new bridge on Pangong Tso lake

  • China is constructing a bridge in Eastern Ladakh connecting the North and South Banks of PangongTso.
  • Construction has been going on for sometime and it would reduce the overall distance by around 140-150kms.
  • India holds one third of the 135 km long boomerang shaped lake located at an altitude of over 14,000 feet.
  • The North bank has been the initial site of the clashes in early May 2020 while tensions on South Bank had flared up later in August.
