Underwater speakers can revive ailing corals

  • A recent study found that underwater speakers placed close to dead coral in Australia's Great Barrier Reef encouraged new fish to show up and settle in.
  • Healthy coral reefs are remarkably noisy places, forming a dazzling biological soundscape. Juvenile fish home in on these sounds when they’re looking for a place to settle.
  • Coral reefs depend on a symbiotic relationship between the coral and algae that lives inside them.
  • Rising ocean temperature, ocean acidification etc are some of the reasons for destruction of coral environment.

Data Protection Bill gets cabinet approval

  • The Union Cabinet, headed by the Prime Minister has approved the Personal Data Protection Bill which is expected to lay down a framework that will include processing of personal and private data by public and private entities, among others.
  • Broad guidelines on collection, storage and processing of personal data, consent of individuals, penalties and compensation, code of conduct and an enforcement model is likely to be a part of the law.
  • In line with European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the government had last year introduced a draft personal data protection bill, under the aegis of Justice B.N.Srikrishna, to regulate the use of individual’s data by the government and private companies.

Owen Coyle appointed coach of Chennaiyin FC

  • Chennaiyin FC have appointed Scotsman Owen Coyle as their new Head Coach. He replaces John Gregory as the head coach of the ISL club.
  • Coyle, a former English Premier League manager with Burnley and Bolton Wanderers, joins CFC on a contract till the end of the season.

South Asian games

  • The 13th edition of the South Asian games are being held in Kathmandu, Pokhara and Janakpur, Nepal from Dec 1-10, 2019.
  • These Games feature 26 sports with cricket returning after 8 years. Golf and karate were the two sports added by the hosts as their choice.
  • The South Asian games are held every two years and feature athletes from South Asian countries viz India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Maldives and Afghanistan.

Sundar Pichai appointed CEO of Alphabet

  • Google chief executive Officer Sundar Pichai will replace Larry Page as CEO of parent company Alphabet Inc.
  • Alphabet, which owns more than a dozen companies including self-driving car technology business Waymo and health care software company Verily, emerged in 2015 as part of a restructuring of Google.
