Emergency extended for two more years in Myanmar

  • Myanmar’s military leader declared himself prime minister and said he would lead the country under the extended state of emergency until elections are held in about two years.
  • He said the state of emergency will achieve its objectives by August 2023. The military government named itself the caretaker government.
  • The state of emergency was declared when troops moved against the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi on Feb. 1.
  • The military claimed her landslide victory in last year’s national elections was achieved through massive voter fraud but offered no credible evidence.

Australia invites India to participate in Exercise Talisman Sabre

  • Australia is keen that India join its biggest war games ‘Exercise Talisman Sabre’ in 2023 and a formal invite could be extended during Australian Defence Minister Peter Dutton’s visit to India.
  • Meanwhile, the Quad group of countries comprising India, Australia, Japan and the U.S. are set to hold the annual Malabar naval exercise 2021 off the coast of Guam end August.
  • Talisman Sabre 2021was the largest bilateral combined training activity between the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and the U.S. military. The other countries include Canada, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and U.K.

  • Ebrahim Raisi was inaugurated as President of Iran. Conservative Raisireplaces moderate President Hassan Rouhani, whose landmark achievement was the 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and six major powers.
  • Mr. Raisi will have to tackle negotiations aimed at reviving the nuclear deal from which the U.S. unilaterally withdrew imposing sweeping sanctions.
  • He also faces the United States, Britain and Israel’s warnings to Iran over a deadly tanker attack last week for which Tehran denies responsibility.
  • Mr. Raisi won a presidential election in June in which more than half the electorate stayed away after many heavyweights were barred from standing.

  • Indian ace Neeraj Chopra secures qualifies for men’s javelin throw finals after recording 86.65 meter, the automatic qualification mark being 83.50m.
  • Neeraj’s credits include gold at Asian Games in under-20 category, and Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
  • However, Shivpal Singh, failed to make the final cut with a below-par best throw of 76.40m, which he came up in his first attempt.
