Chinese scientists create new strain of Coronavirus

  • In China, scientists have created a new strain of coronavirus. Experts in the field of molecular biology has modified COVID-19 to his new artificial species could infect mice to test vaccines.
  • Scientists have replaced only one nucleotide in the genome of the coronavirus, which ensured the defeat of the body laboratory rodents.
  • As an alternative, scientists have proposed to use for testing of specially trained rodents, which can affect COVID-19. The group of mice with the human version of the gene a new type of SARS-CoV-2, will begin work to create vaccines.

AI helps detect early signs of glaucoma

  • Using Artificial Intelligence (AI), researchers have developed a quick test to identify which people with glaucoma are at risk of rapid progression to blindness.
  • A new test can detect glaucoma progression 18 months earlier than the current gold standard method. Glaucoma, the leading global cause of irreversible blindness, affects over 60 million people.
  • The test, called DARC (Detection of Apoptosing Retinal Cells), involves injecting into the bloodstream (via the arm) a fluorescent dye that attaches to retinal cells, and illuminates those that are in the process of apoptosis, a form of programmed cell death.

Silver Lake invests in Reliance Jio platform

  • American private equity giant Silver Lake Partners has bought 1 percent of Jio Platforms for ? 5,655.75 crore ($750 million) in a deal that takes Jio's enterprise value to ? 5.15 lakh crore.
  • Silver Lake  shot into prominence after acquiring PC maker Dell Inc along with Michael Dell in 2013. It  is a global leader in technology investing, with over $43 billion in combined assets under management and committed capital.
  • Since its launch three years ago, Jio  has grown at a sprinter’s pace to become India’s largest telecom company. It has accumulated some 340 million customers through a barrage of innovations, including offering cut-throat mobile internet prices and a diverse suite of products and including chat services, movies, games and music.

NIAB develops portable Coronavirus detection kit

  • Researchers from the National Institute of Animal Biotechnology (NIAB), Hyderabad, have developed a biosensor that can detect the novel coronavirus in saliva samples.
  • Biosensors have been currently used across the world to detect toxins, narcotic drugs, and are also considered as a reliable tool to detect infectious diseases.
  • The new portable device named eCovSens, can be used to detect the presence of novel coronavirus antigens in human saliva within 30 seconds using just 20 microlitres of the sample.
  • The in-house built biosensor consists of a carbon electrode and the coronavirus antibody. The antibody is capable of binding with the spike protein found on the outer layer of the virus. An electrical signal is generated when the antigen and antibody binds.

Renowned poet Nisar Ahmed passes away

  • Noted Kannada poet K.S. Nisar Ahmed, 84, also popular as "Nityotsava Kavi", passed away in Bengaluru. He was suffering from age-related ailments.
  • A geology professor by profession, he was a prolific poet and writer who dabbled in various literary forms - criticism, children's literature, translations of several Shakespeare plays into Kannada.
  • He has been awarded the highest literary award of the State Pampa Award (2017), Rajyotsava award (1981) and Padma Sri (2008). He chaired the annual Sahitya Sammelana held in Shivamogga in 2007 and inaugurated Dasara in 2017.
