India’s unemployment rate decreasing

  • Unemployment rate in the country is decreasing with the economy slowly returning to normal, according to CMIE data.
  • The Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy's monthly time series data revealed that the overall unemployment rate in India was 8.10% in February 2022, which fell to 7.6% in March.
  • Haryana recorded the highest unemployment rate in March at 26.7%, followed by Rajasthan and Jammu and Kashmir at 25% each, Bihar at 14.4%, Tripura at 14.1% and West Bengal at 5.6%.
  • Karnataka and Gujarat registered the least unemployment rate at 1.8.% each in March, 2022.

Taliban bans opium cultivation

  • Afghanistan’s ruling Taliban announced a ban on poppy production, even as farmers across the country began harvesting the opium to make heroin.
  • The order warns farmers that their crops will be burned and they can be jailed if they proceed with the harvest.
  • Poppies are the main source of income for millions of small farmers and day labourers who can earn upwards of $300 a month harvesting them and extracting the opium.

Australia wins Women’s World Cup

  • Australia produced dominant performance in the final to beat England by 71 runs, to win seventh Women’s World Cup title in Christchurch.
  • Australians have now won three of the last five 50-over World Cups and own both the major global trophies, having claimed the T20 World Cup on home soil in 2020.
  • Alyssa Healy also became the first batter in the history of the game to hit a hundred in the semi-final and the final of World Cup.

Sri Lankan cabinet resigns

  • Sri Lanka’s cabinet ministers have resigned en masse after protests over the government’s handling of the worst economic crisis in decades.
  • The President has invited members of the opposition to join the government and work together to overcome the economic crisis.
  • Sri Lanka is presently facing a foreign exchange shortage which has led to a food, fuel, power, and gas shortage and has sought economic assistance from friendly countries.

National Assembly of Pakistan dissolved

  • Pakistan’s president dissolved the country’s National Assembly after a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan was rejected by the legislative body’s deputy speaker.   
  • The move means fresh elections must be held within 90 days.
  • Pakistan’s opposition have accused the Imran Khan government of violating Pakistan’s constitution.
  • Critics of PM Imran Khan have accused him of failing to deliver on promises to revitalize the economy and improve the conditions for the poor.
