TOI-197.0: TESS discovers new exoplanet

  • Astronomers discovered new exoplanet named TESS Object of Interest (TOI)-197.0 or “hot Saturn”, using Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), a NASA’s exoplanet-hunting space telescope.
  • It is dubbed “hot Saturn” because of its size and hot temperature. It is almost 60 times bigger than our planet and is 5-billion-year-old.
  • It completes its orbit in 14 days, because planet is very close to its host star.
  • Data sent by TESS will help scientists gain valuable insights into other solar systems.

Air Marshal D. Choudhury appointed head of Western Air Command

  • Air Marshal D. Choudhury AVSM VM VSM took over as Senior Air Staff Officer of Western Air Command.
  • He is an alumnus of National Defence Academy, and was commissioned on 22nd December 1983.
  • He is experienced as Commanding officer in 15 Sqn, Tactics and Air Combat Development Establishment (TACDE) and two frontline bases as AOC (Air officer Commanding).
  • He was honored with CAS commendation in Aug 1992, Vishisht Seva Medal in Jan 2007, Vayu Sena Medal in Jan 2011 and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in Jan 2018.

Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika resigns after 20 years.

  • The Algerian president, Abdelaziz Bouteflika (82 year old), who held power for last 20 years (since 1999) resigned after weeks of mass protest.
  • As per Article 102 of Algerian Constitution, Parliament could declare a president unfit to rule nation if he is unable to function properly due to ill-health.
  • Until elections are held, Abdelkader being chairman of upper house of Parliament is expected to become caretaker president for three months.

Pawan Munjal felicitated with Special Achievement Award by Asian Tour

  • Dr. Pawan Munjal, Hero MotoCorp Chairman, was honoured with “Special Achievement Award” by Asian Tour, for his contributions to Asian Golf, at Hero Indian Open Golf tournament concluding ceremony, held at Gurugram, Haryana.
  • Being a fine golfer himself, he supports Hero Indian Open for 14 years, Hero Women’s Indian Open, Hero Challenge series on European Tour, Hero World Challenge on PGA Tour and also hosts multiple golf tournaments in India, including marquee Hero Indian Open for both men and women.  He was presented a special salver by leading Indian golfer Shiv Kapur
  • Under Dr Munjal’s leadership, Hero MotoCorp achieved the title of World’s No. 1 two-wheeler in 2001.

Kotak Mahindra Bank: 1st lender to impose charges on UPI transactions

  • Kotak Mahindra Bank become first lender the country to levy charges on peer-to-peer (P2P) UPI transactions across all platforms, namely, Paytm, Google Pay, PhonePe, Trucaller Pay etc.
  • For its own account holders, first 30 P2P UPI fund transfer will be free of cost, once exceeded 30 UPI transactions charge of Rs. 2.50 per transaction for of Rs. 1000 or less, and for transfers more than Rs.1000, Rs. 5 plus 18% GST charge will be applied.
  • No additional charges will be imposed upon receiving money via UPI for merchant transactions or bill payments. The limit introduced is to curb abuse of the UPI system.
  • National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has reduced charges on merchant transactions through UPI. It has brought transactions charges for amount below and above 1000, to a flat rate of 10 paise for all (along with an ad valoreum charge of 0.04% divided between issuing bank and acquiring bank).
