Tamil Nadu: 1st State to introduce TAVI in government hospitals

  • Tamil Nadu become first state in the country to introduce Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) in the government hospitals.
  • TAVI is performed on old-age heart patients who cannot undergo an open-heart surgery and involves replacement of valve through a keyhole procedure.
  • It was launched at the Tamil Nadu Government Multi Super Speciality Hospital (TNGMSSH), Omandurar Estate in November 2018 and two people underwent the surgery free of cost.

Kavya Kopparapu awarded National STEM Award 2019

  • Indian-American teenager Kavya Kopparapu was awarded $10,000 National STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Education Award 2019.
  • She was awarded for her significant invention in enhancing treatments of glioblastoma– which is the deadliest form of brain cancer.
  • She has developed GlioVision, a high accuracy medicine platform powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI).
  • It performs prediction of brain tumour characteristics by using scanned image of biopsy rather than NA sample in lesser time and that to at lower costs.
  • Kavya Kopparapu is student of computer science and biology at Harvard University. She has also heads Girls Computing League– a non-profit organisation.

India tops in Global Consumer Confidence Index

  • India was ranked first in Global Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) released as part of Confidence Board Global Consumer Confidence Survey conducted by global performance management company Nielsen Holdings.
  • India has maintained its first position from 3rd quarter and in 4th quarter of 2018 with total score of 133.
  • Global CCI has become highest in 14 years by increasing one point to 107 in 4th quarter of 2018. The increase in confidence is a positive sign for economic and business growth in 2019.
  • CCI measures optimism of consumers towards job prospects, health of personal finances and spending intentions in the next 12 months for the survey.

Ramesh Chand nominated to head Food and Agriculture Organisation

  • India has nominated NITI Aayog member Ramesh Chand for new post of Director-General of Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).
  • The election for this top post of FAO is scheduled to take place in June 2019 to selected successor to incumbent Brazilian economist Jose Graziano da Silva, who has served two terms since 2011.
  • The next head will be elected by a simple majority of its 194 members of the United Nations.
  • It is United Nations is specialized agency that leads international efforts to defeat hunger. It is headquartered in Rome, Italy.
