Maharashtra assembly speaker Nana Patole resigns

  • Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Speaker Nana Patole resigned from his post in order to make way for his new role.
  • Patole, is a MLA from Sakoli in Bhandara districta and is likely to replace revenue minister Balasaheb Thorat as state Congress president soon.
  • Deputy speaker Narhari Zirwal will perform the duties of the speaker until a new speaker is elected.

Serum institute and UNICEF sign deal for supplying Covid-19 vaccine

  • The Serum Institute of India (SII) and UNICEF have entered into a long-term supply agreement for the AstraZeneca/Oxford and the Novavax vaccines.
  • India is one of the world's biggest drug makers, and an increasing number of countries have already approached it for procuring the coronavirus vaccines.
  • While Oxford-AstraZeneca's Covishield is being manufactured by Pune-based Serum Institute, and the Novavax is being produced by US-based Novavax Inc.

Chauri Chaura centenary

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the Chauri Chaura Centenary Celebrations at Chauri Chaura, Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh via video conferencing.
  • The Prime Minister also released a postal stamp dedicated to the Chauri Chaura centenary during the event.
  • The Uttar Pradesh government has planned to develop the 'Chauri Chaura Shaheed Memorial' in Gorakhpur as a heritage tourist spot ahead as the state government decides to hold yearlong celebrations to mark 100 years of the 'Chauri Chaura' incident.
  • On February 4, 1922, a large group of protesters participating in the Non-cooperation movement, clashed with police at Chauri Chaura who opened fire. 
  • In retaliation the protestors attacked the police and set fire to the police station, killing all the policemen inside.

Reliance inks deal to sell upstream assets in US

  • Reliance Marcellus, LLC (RMLLC), a wholly owned subsidiary of Reliance Industries Ltd has signed agreements to divest all of its interest in certain upstream assets in the Marcellus shale play of south-western Pennsylvania.
  • These assets, which are currently operated by various affiliates of EQT Corporation have been agreed to be sold to Northern Oil and Gas, Inc, (NOG) a Delaware corporation,
  • The deal involves $250 million cash and warrants that give entitlement to purchase 3.25 million common shares of NOG at an exercise price of $14.00 per common share in next seven years.

Mysteries of a goat’s gut

  • Goats are known to process ability to digest cellulose present in their food source. How it unlocks nutrients locked behind thick walls of cells remained a mystery.
  • To understand the process of cellulose, researchers from the University of California collected their faecal samples and carried out about 400 experiments.
  • The team found over 700 novel microbial genomes which included rare fungi playing important roles in this cellulose degradation. They also emit methane as by-product.
