Bushfires ravages across Australia

  • Australia is facing an unprecedented national crisis, as bushfires tear through rural communities across the nation. Since September, at least 20 people have died and over 1,500 homes have been destroyed.
  • In major cities, such as Sydney and Melbourne, a dense smoke has descended over busy metropolitan areas like a blanket.
  • Australia experienced its hottest year on record in 2019, climbing 1.5 degrees Celsius higher than the average and this increased the chances for bushfires.

Adani firm to buy 75% stake in Krishnaptnam port

  1. Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) will buy a 75 per cent stake in Krishnapatnam Port Company Ltd, the entity that runs a private deep-water port at Krishnapatnam in Andhra Pradesh’s Nellore district.
  2. The deal is APSEZ’s biggest acquisition yet in India’s port sector in terms of value and size and helps it build scale in an industry that is dominated by the 12 state-owned ports.
  3. Krishnapatnam, a port owned by the Andhra Pradesh government, was given to the Hyderabad-based CVR Group for development and operations on a 30-year contract.

India’s gold imports hit 3 year low in 2019

  • India's gold imports in 2019 fell 12% from a year ago to the lowest level in three years. In value terms, 2019 imports fell nearly 2% to $31.22 billion.
  • Lower buying by the world's second biggest consumer of the precious metal could weigh on global prices that jumped 18 per cent in 2019.
  • India meets nearly all its gold demand through imports. Usually imports jump during the second half due to the wedding season as well as festivals such as Diwali and Dussehra, when buying gold is considered auspicious.

Former Tamil Nadu assembly speaker P.H.Pandian passes away

  • Former Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Assembly and senior advocate Paul Hector Pandian, popularly known as P.H. Pandian, died in Chennai.
  • Mr. Pandian was elected to the Tamil Nadu Assembly from Cheranmahadevi constituency, his native place, in 1977, and continued his victorious streak in the 1980, 1984 and 1989 Assembly polls.
  • He was the Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Assembly between February 27, 1985 and February 5, 1989.

Kochi to have embedded GIS map

  • A user-friendly Geographic Information System-based master plan is being developed for Kochi city.
  • The first such plan is being developed using GIS software, which will map existing buildings, land use and utilities, and help prepare development proposals.
  • The map is being designed to make it accessible on mobile phones. The project is being implemented by the department under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT).
