Kerala plans ‘happiness’ curriculum for students

  • A ‘happiness’ curriculum will be drafted by the Kerala government to ease students into the learning environment once schools reopen on November 1.
  • For the first couple of weeks, instead of direct lessons, focus will be on play, songs, and stories to make the back-to-school experience a joyful one for students.
  • The decision was taken at a meeting of the Quality Improvement Programme (QIP) monitoring committee meeting. The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has been entrusted with the preparation of the curriculum.

New species of blind freshwater eel discovered from Mumbai well

  • A new species of the blind swamp eel belonging to the genus Rakthamichthys has been discovered from a well in Mumbai.
  • The new species is a `hypogean freshwater eel’ and the discovery was credited to Tejas Thackeray, PraveenrajJaisimhan, Anil Mohapatra and Annam Pavan Kumar. The species has been namedRakthamichtysmumba – the Mumbai blind eel.
  • It is the first completely blind subterranean freshwater fish species to be described from Maharashtra and the northern Western Ghats.

Second phase of Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban, Amrut launched

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the second phase of the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban (SBM-U) and the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT).
  • SBM-U 2.0 envisions to make all cities ‘garbage free’ and ensure grey and black water management in all cities, make all urban local bodies open defecation free+ and those with a population of less than one lakh as open defecation free++.
  • The mission will focus on source segregation of solid waste, utilising the principles of 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle), scientific processing of all types of municipal solid waste and remediation of legacy dumpsites for effective solid waste management.

Smriti Mandhana becomes first Indian woman to score

  • Indian women’s cricket team opener Smriti Mandhana became the first Indian woman to score a century in a pink-ball Test during her knock against Australia in the one-off Pink Ball Test.
  • It is the first-ever occasion for the Indian women to be playing a Test match under the lights. This is also only the second pink-ball Test to have ever been played in women's cricket.
  • Mandhana now also holds the record of being the Indian woman with the highest individual scores in Australia across formats.

Najla Bouden becomes Tunisia’s first woman Prime Minister

  • Tunisia’s president named geologist Najla Bouden as the country’s first ever female prime minister-designate, two months after he seized wide-ranging powers.
  • Ms. Bouden will be the Tunisia’s tenth Prime Minister since a 2011 uprising overthrew long-time dictator Zine El Abedine Ben Ali, sparking the Arab Spring revolts.
  • The country has won international plaudits for its democratic transition but many Tunisians have seen little improvement in their lives and have become disillusioned with a dysfunctional and corrupt political process.
