India and UK to jointly conduct studies on Ashwagandha

  • The Ministry of Ayush has collaborated with the U.K.’s London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) to conduct a study on ‘Ashwagandha’ for promoting recovery from COVID-19.
  • The clinical trials of ‘Ashwagandha’ will be conducted on 2,000 people in three U.K. cities — Leicester, Birmingham and London (Southall and Wembley).
  • ‘Ashwagandha’ (Withania somnifera), commonly known as ‘Indian winter cherry’, is a traditional Indian herb that boosts energy, reduces stress and makes the immune system stronger.
  • The positive effects of ‘Ashwagandha’ have been observed in Long COVID, which is a multi-system disease with no evidence of its effective treatment or management.

Narendra Modi becomes first Prime minister to chair UNSC debate

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually preside over an open debate on maritime security at the UN Security Council (UNSC) on August 9.
  • This will be the 1st time an Indian Prime Minister will preside over Open Debate.
  • India began its two-year tenure as a non-permanent member of the UNSC on January 1. It is India's seventh term on the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member.
  • India will again preside over the Council in December next year, the last month of its two-year tenure.

Lok Sabha passes bill to privatise state-owned insurance firms

  • The Lok Sabha passed a Bill that allows the government to privatise state-owned general insurance companies.
  • The General Insurance Business (Nationalisation) Amendment Bill, 2021, was tabled in Lok Sabha on 30 July.
  • The Bill seeks to usher in more private capital into general insurance business and to help improve its reach and make more products available to customers.
  • The move is part of the government’s strategy to open up more sectors to private participation and improve efficiency.

PMO adviser Amarjeet Sinha resigns

  • Amarjeet Sinha, advisor in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), has resigned from his post seven months ahead of his two-year tenure.
  • A retired IAS officer of 1983 batch from Bihar, Mr. Sinha, who superannuated as secretary from the Government of India, was appointed in the PMO in February 2020.
  • He was tasked with handling social sector-related subjects. He superannuated as rural development secretary in 2019.
  • Mr. Sinha becomes the third top official from the PMO to go before the completion of the tenure after the 2019 parliamentary poll.

India, China decide to disengage from critical patrol point

  • India and China have agreed in principle to disengage at a key patrol point in eastern Ladakh even though other friction areas remain in the region.
  • The agreement on PP17A was reached during the 12th round of Corps Commander-level talks. The meeting was held on the Indian side of the Chushul-Moldo border.
  • China has agreed to step back from PP17A, also known as the Gogra Post, but is not inclined to move back from PP15 or the Hot Springs area.
  • The proposals are with the government, and details of how the troops will move are being discussed. The movement is expected to start within the next couple of days.
