Mamata Banerjee to move EC over Nandigram result

  • Mamata Banerjee vowed to move court over the Nandigram result where she lost to her former protégé-turned-rival Suvendu Adhikari.
  • It was initially reported that Banerjee had won by a margin of 1,200 votes, but the returning officer subsequently announced Adhikari’s victory by 1,956 votes.
  • After the returning officer turned down its plea for an immediate recounting of the votes polled in Nandigram, the TMC wrote to the Chief Election Officer asking him to reconsider it.

Snake species named after Herpathologist

  • A species of snake has been named in honour of Indian herpetologist Deepak Veerappan for his contribution in erecting a new subfamily Xylophiinae to accommodate wood snakes.
  • The tiny snake a just 20 cm length with iridescent scales - Xylophis deepaki, fand was first discovered upon in a coconut plantation in Kanyakumari.
  • It is now reported to be an endemic species of Tamil Nadu and has been sighted in a few locations in the southern part of the Western Ghats.

Kerala Congress (B) chairman Balakrishna Pillai dies

  • Veteran politician and Kerala Congress (B) chairman R. Balakrishna Pillai, 87, died at a private hospital at Kottarakara in Kollam district.
  • Mr. Pillai was chairman of the Kerala State Welfare Commission for Forward Communities. He enjoyed Cabinet rank privileges.
  • He was also long a member of the Board of Directors of the Nair Service Society (NSS) and chairperson of the Kerala Congress (B).
  • He rose in the party's ranks and was elected a lawmaker for the first time in 1960. He had served as Excise and Transport Minister in successive governments

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to seek vote of confidence

  • Nepal’s Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli will seek a vote of confidence from Parliament on May 10 in his bid to stay in power.
  • Mr. Oli requires at least 136 votes in the 275-member House of Representatives, the lower house of Parliament, to win the confidence motion as four members are currently under suspension.
  • Mr. Oli’s decision comes amid the current chaotic state of political affairs in the country that emerged since the Prime Minister’s controversial move to dissolve the House of Representatives in December last year.
