New fish identified in Indian waters

  • The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) has identified a new carangid (Vatta) species from the Indian coast.
  • It belongs to the ‘queen fish’ group and is named scomberoidespelagicus’ The fish is locally known as polavatta.
  • There are over 60 species of carangids in the Indian seas and four of them belong to the ‘queen fish’ category. The newly-described one is the fifth queen fish from the Indian waters.

PLA commander at Galwan to be torch bearer for Beijing Olympics

  • A People’s Liberation Army (PLA) regiment commander who was involved in theclash with India in Galwan Valley was chosen by the Chinese government to carry the Winter Olympic torch relay in Beijing.
  • The Winter Olympics will open in a lavish ceremony to be attended by President Xi Jinping and more than a dozen world leaders, including Russia’s Vladimir Putin, five Central Asian Presidents and Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan.
  • China’s government has continued to keep the Galwan clash in the public spotlight even as both sides continue talks on disengagement along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Hoysala temples recommended for UNESCO World Heritage sites list

  • The Hoysala temples in Beluru and Halebeedu have been finalized as India’s nominations to the list of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites in the world, for the year of 2022-23.
  • If the Hoysala temples attain this status, these monuments will be fourth on the state’s list of World Heritage Sites.
  • The other three include the Hampi Monuments of Vijayanagara, Pattadakallu Temples complex of the Chalukyan era and the Western Ghats.

India designates two more Ramsarsites

  • India added two Ramsarsites. The two new Ramsar sites (Wetlands of International Importance) areKhijadia Bird Sanctuary in Gujarat and Bakhira Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh.
  • Bakhira Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh provides a safe wintering and staging ground for a large number of species of the Central Asian Flyway.
  • Khijadia Wildlife Sanctuary is a coastal wetland with rich avifaunal diversity providing a safe habitat to endangered and vulnerable species.
  • Ramsar Sites in India are declared under the Ramsar Convention, which was established by UNESCO in 1971.

Electoral bonds worth ? 1,213 crore sold

  • Electoral bonds worth ?1,213 crore were sold by the SBI in January, with most of them  being encashed in the New Delhi branch.
  • This comes as campaigning for the Assembly elections in Goa, Manipur, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand is in full swing, after being announced on January 8.
  • The scheme enables Indian citizens or companies to buy the bonds from 29 SBI branches in denominations of ?1,000, ?10,000, ?1 lakh, ?10 lakh and ?1 crore to be used as anonymous donations to political parties.
