Super solar storms

  • Researchers have studied the past fourteen cycles of the Sun for the first time and found that ‘severe’ magnetic storms have occurred 42 times. and ‘Great’ super storms have occurred only six times in the last 150 years.
  • Great superstorms don’t last more than a few days. But their effect on modern technology lasts longer.
  • It’s especially disastrous for aviation since it can disrupt GPS signals thwarting navigation and block radio communication.

Sandeep Mathrani named WeWork CEO

  • WeWork have named Sandeep Mathrani as their new CEO.
  • Sandeep Mathrani, who was previously was CEO of Brookfield Property Partners’ retail group, will replace Artie Minson and Sebastian Cunningham.
  • Marcelo Claure will remain executive chairman of We. and Mathrani will report to him.

Probe into study conducted on bat and bat hunters of Nagaland

  • The government has recently ordered an inquiry into a study of bats and bat hunters that had been conducted in Nagaland.
  • The investigation has been ordered to know how  the scientists were allowed to access live samples of bats and bat hunters (humans) without due permissions.
  • The study was carried out by Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), the Wuhan Institute of Virology, the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in the US and the Duke-National University in Singapore.

NRIs income in India to be taxed

  • The government has clarified that the income earned by NRIs will not be taxed until it is earned through business in India.
  • The clarification has come after the Finance Bill, 2020 has proposed that an Indian citizen shall be deemed to be resident in India, if he is not liable to be taxed in any country or jurisdiction.
  • The new provision is not intended to include in tax net those Indian citizens who are bonafide workers in other countries.

Portable detector for identifying concussion on field

  • A team of doctors and engineers has developed a non-invasive way to measure whether brain cells are in distress using an infrared laser.
  • The device uses optical fibres to deliver pulses of infrared light to a person’s forehead.
  • This light can penetrate through the skin and skull to the brain without doing harm, interacting with an important molecule for metabolism called cytochrome C oxidase, or CCO.
  • This device could guide the treatment of more serious brain injuries and other conditions that put the brain at risk.
