Actress Betty White passes away

  • Actress Betty White, who starred on popular sitcoms "The Golden Girls" and "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," died at age 99.
  • In addition to her multiple Emmys, White was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 1995. She won three Screen Actors Guild awards, including a lifetime achievement trophy in 2010.
  • She also starred on TV Land’s “Hot in Cleveland” and hosted the hidden camera prank show “Off Their Rockers.”

US removes Ethiopia, Mali and Guinea from Africa duty free trade

  • The United States blocked Ethiopia, Mali and Guinea from access to a duty-free trade program, following through on President Joe Biden’s threat to do so over human rights violations and recent coups.
  • President Joe Biden warned in November that Ethiopia would be cut off from the AGOA duty-free trading regime due to alleged human rights violations in the Tigray region, while Mali and Guinea were targeted due to recent coups.
  • The AGOA program was started by former US president Bill Clinton, to facilitate trade between the US and African nations.

Kenyan conservationist Richard Leakey passes away

  • World-renowned Kenyan conservationist and fossil hunter Richard Leakey, whose ground-breaking discoveries helped prove that humankind evolved in Africa, died at the age of 77.
  • As the slaughter of African elephants reached a crescendo in the late 1980s, Leakey emerged as one of the world’s leading voices against the then legal global ivory trade.
  • Leakey was awarded a National Geographic Society research grant to excavate on the beaches of northern Kenya's Lake Turkana.

Sudanese Prime Minister resigns

  • Sudan’s civilian Prime Minister AbdallaHamdok resigned, more than two months after a coup and following another deadly crackdown on protesters.
  • Sudan had been undergoing a fragile journey toward civilian rule since the 2019 ouster of autocrat Omar al-Bashir.
  • Protesters have also charged that the deal to reinstate Hamdok simply aimed to give a cloak of legitimacy to the generals.

Mohammad Hafeez retires from international cricket

  • Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez has retired from international cricket, ending a career that spanned over 18 years.
  • Hafeez, who made his international debut in 2003 in an ODI versus Zimbabwe, played his last international game against Australia in the T20 WC semifinal.
  • He ended his career having played 55 Tests, 218 ODIs and 119 T20Is accumulating 12,780 runs across formats and 253 wickets.
