Galaxy with peculiar hydrogen ring found

Date: 04 January 2020 Tags: Space
  • A team of astronomers at NCRATIFR, Pune, have discovered a mysterious ring of hydrogen gas in a distant galaxy, using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT).
  • The hydrogen ring is surrounded by a diameter of about four times of the Milky Way. The galaxy, named AGC 203001, is located about 260 million light years from us.
  • The ring is peculiarly off-centred unlike the common occurrences, where hydrogen gas is connected to the outer ring of the galaxy. In another unique characteristic, there are no formed stars, yet.
  • Normally, the hydrogen gas condenses to form stars. However, in this scenario, no star formation was seen. This is an element of surprise despite the huge amount of hydrogen gas.
