Bollywood actor Brahma Mishra passes away

  • Actor Brahmaswaroop Mishra (36), better known as Brahma Mishra, was found dead at his rented residence in Mumbai’s Versova.
  • Mishra was known for his roles in HaseenDillruba (2021), Kesari (2019) and ChorChor Super Chor (2013).
  • The police suspect that the actor died due to a cardiac arrest and have sent the body for an autopsy.

India joins G20’s Troika

  • India on December 1, 2021,  joined the G20 ‘Troika’. With this move, India has started the procedure for taking over the G20 presidency next year.
  • Troika refers to the top grouping within the G20 that consists of the current, previous and the incoming presidencies — Indonesia, Italy and India.
  • Italy hosted the G20 summit during October 30-31 that was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi where India had raised the issue of Afghanistan’s future following the takeover by the Taliban.

OECD cuts world growth outlook

  • The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) warned that the Omicron variant threatens the global economic recovery as it lowered the growth outlook for 2021 and appealed for a swifter roll-out of COVID vaccines.
  • The global economy is now expected to expand by 5.6% this year, down from an earlier forecast of 5.7%. Its forecast for 2022 remains unchanged at 4.5%.
  • Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development said the global recovery is continuing to progress. But it warned that it has lost momentum and is becoming increasingly stagnant.

Anju Bobby George wins World Athletics’ Woman of the Year award

  • Indian athlete Anju Bobby George won the Woman of the Year Award by World Athletics for grooming talent and encouraging young girls in India to take up sports and fight for gender equality.
  • She is the only Indian to have won a medal in the World Championships with a long jump bronze in the 2003 edition, was named for the award in the world body's annual awards night on December 1.
  • She finished sixth in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens with a personal best leap of 6.83m, but was elevated to fifth place in 2007.

World AIDS day

  • Every year, on 1 December, the world commemorates World AIDS Day. People around the world unite to show support for people living with and affected by HIV AIDS.
  • The theme of World AIDS Day 2021 is “End inequalities. End AIDS”.  With a special focus on reaching people left behind, WHO and its partners are highlighting the growing inequalities in access to essential HIV services.
  • HIV remains a major public health issue that affects millions of people worldwide. Although the world has made significant progress in recent decades,  important global targets for 2020 were not met.
