UK approves Pfizer’s vaccine

  • UK becomes first country in the world to approve the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for use and said that it will be rolled out from early next week.
  • A vaccine is seen as the best chance for the world to get back to some semblance of normality amid a global pandemic which has killed nearly 1.5 million people and upended the global economy.
  • Both Pfizer-BioNTech and U.S. biotech firm Moderna have reported preliminary findings of more than 90% effectiveness, which are both based on new messenger RNA (mRNA) technology.

India refuse to support Chinese BRI at SCO summit

  • India has refused to extend support to China's mega connectivity project OBOR or One Belt One Road initiative at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization or SCO summit.
  • India was the only country in the eight-member grouping which refused to support the project that has often been in news for its lack of transparency and whooping cost for the host country.
  • At previous SCO meets, India has stayed away from supporting OBOR. India had become a member of the Beijing headquartered grouping in 2017.
  • A key portion of One Belt One Road is the CPEC or China Pakistan economic corridor, which passes through PoK or Pakistani occupied Kashmir.
  • India has several times protested against it with Beijing on OBOR being violative of territorial integrity and asked them to cease such activities.

Neera Tanden appointed by Joe Biden as chief of White House budget staff

  • US President-elect Joe Biden has nominated Indian-American Neera Tanden as Director of Office of Management and Budget, as he announced key members of his economic team.
  • Tanden would be the first woman of colour and first Indian-American to lead the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).
  • Tanden is the President and CEO of the left-leaning think tank Centre for American Progress (CAP), and the CEO of the American Progress Action Fund.
  • Her nomination is part of the Biden administration's plan to build a team of liberal and centrist economic advisors.

Actor Dave Prowse passes away

  • David “Dave” Prowse, the actor best known for playing Darth Vader in the original Star Wars trilogy, has died at the age of 85.
  • Prowse was a former bodybuilder who had a series of roles as monsters and villains before being invited by George Lucas to audition for the roles of Vader and Chewbacca.
  • He won the British heavyweight weightlifting championship three times and was selected to represent England at the 1962 Commonwealth Games in Perth, Australia.
  • Prowse’s first film was 1967’s Casino Royale, where he played Frankenstein’s Monster. He was the personal trainer who prepared Christopher Reeve for the role of Superman in 1978.

China successfully lands Chang’e-5

  • The Chang'e-5 probe successfully landed on the near side of the moon. It becomes China's third probe that has successfully made a soft landing on the moon.
  • The landing site is located in the Ocean of Storms, a region in the northern hemisphere of the near side of the moon with flat terrain, ideal temperature, light, and communication conditions.
  • The lander will shovel some surface material and also drill a 2-meter-deep hole and scoop up the soil from inside it.
  • Getting hold of samples would allow scientists to confirm the age of the rocks and compare them with other cratered areas on major rocky bodies in the solar system.
