SumitNagal becomes first Indian in seven years to win singles match at Grand Slam

  • India’s SumitNagal reached the second round of the 2020 US Open by defeating USA’s Bradley Klahn 6-1, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
  • He became the first Indian since SomdevDevvarman (2013 US Open) to win a match in the main draw of a Grand Slam.
  • Nagal, who made his Grand Slam debut as a qualifer at US Open last year, grabbed headlines last year for taking a first set off 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer in their first-round match at Flushing Meadows.
  • The India No 1, a direct entry this year, will now face second seed Dominic Thiem, who went through against his opponent  Spain’s Jaume Munar.

PM Modi to virtually address UN General Assembly

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to address the UN General Assembly on September 26, according to a provisional list of speakers issued by the world body for the high-level meeting.
  • For the first time in the UN's 75-year history, the annual General Assembly session this year will be held virtually and heads of state and government will not be physically attending the annual gathering due to the coronavirus pandemic.
  • World leaders will submit pre-recorded video statements for the session.According to the list, Modi is expected to address the General Debate on the morning of September 26.

Charu Sinha becomes first woman IG to lead CRPF batallion in Kashmir

  • IPS officer Charu Sinha has become the first woman commander to head the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) formation in the Kashmir Valley.
  • Sinha, a 1996-batch officer of the Telangana cadre, has been appointed as the Inspector General (IG) of CRPF’s Srinagar sector that oversees the deployment of the paramilitary forces’ battalions in Srinagar city of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
  • The officer was till now serving as the CRPF IG in Jammu. She earlier headed the CRPF formation in Bihar that includes the deployment of the force in anti-Naxal operations in that state.

Pakistan bans Tinder

  • Pakistan Tuesday banned access to five online dating/live streaming mobile applications, including Tinder and Grindr, citing negative effects of immoral/indecent content streaming through the applications.
  • While Tinder, Skout, Grindr are online dating platforms, Tagged, a subsidiary of Hi5, and SayHi, are social networking platforms.
  • A recent study by the Indonesian Journal of Communication Studies had indicated that online dating increased in the country through Tinder.
  • Most of Pakistan’s Tinder users come from major cities, including Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi, and are usually between 18 and 40 years old.

India withdraws from Kavkaz 2020 military drill

  • India will not send its contingent to the multinational military exercise Kavkaz-2020, being organised in Russia, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Both China and Pakistan are going to be a part of the multinational exercise. India was invited by Russia to participate in the tri-services exercise with a contingent of around 200 personnel to southern Russia in September for the multi-lateral Kavkaz-2020.
  • The exercise is being held in the Astrakhan province of Southern Russia where member countries of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and Central Asian countries would be participating.
