Argentina imposes exchange controls

  • Argentina has imposed foreign-exchange controls on exporters owing to a week of financial uncertainty that saw a sharp drop in its currency, peso.
  • Transferring money abroad will now require government permission and individuals seeking to buy dollars now face a monthly limit of 10,000 greenbacks.
  • Argentina has been in recession since 2018, and is battling rising unemployment and one of the world's highest inflation rates, running at more than 55 percent.

Vice President inaugurates longest electrified tunnel

  • Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu inaugurated India's longest electrified rail tunnel.
  • Situated between Cherlopalli and Rapuru stations of Andhra Pradesh, the 6.6-km long tunnel is a part of the Obulavaripalli-Venkatachalam railway line.
  • The 112-km long electrified railway line between Venkatachalam and Obulavaripalli will reduce the the travel time by 5 hours

Hurricane Dorian approaches Bahamas and Florida

  • Hurricane Dorian bore down on the northern Bahamas  with howling winds, surging seas and a threat of torrential rains, which has forced some evacuations.
  • Forecasters expectDorian, packing 150 mph (240 kph) winds, to hit some Bahamian islands Sunday before heading near Florida.
  • The projected turn north in the coming days could spare the US a direct hit, but would still threaten the states of Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas.

Chandrayaan-2: Vikram Lander seperates from orbiter

  • India’s moon Misson Chandrayaan-2 entered the last stage before landing when its Lander Vikram along with rover Pragyaan seperated from the orbiter during moon revolution.
  • After two de-orbit manoeuvres, Vikram is expected to touchdown on the lunar surface between 1.30am and 2.30am on September 7.
  • So far, only the US, Russia and China have managed to successfully land equipment on Moon.

PM Modi wins award from Gates foundation

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to receive  award for one of his ambitious projects –the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. 
  • Swachh Bharat campaign was launched to eliminate open defecation nationwide in five years. The mission has two thrusts: Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (rural) and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Urban).
  • Bill and Melinda gates foundation honours individuals or groups that are involved in social causes or working for upliftment of society.
