Smokers face 50% higher risk of severe Covid

  • The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that people who smoke tobacco have up to 50 per cent higher risk of developing serious illnesses and dying due to Covid-19.
  • The comment about smokers being at higher risk from Covid-19 has come nearly a year after India's health ministry had made a similar observation.
  • It had said that smokers were more vulnerable from SARS-CoV-2 as smoking enhanced the chances of transmitting the virus from hand to mouth.

India to receive normal to above normal rainfall

  • India will receive normal to above normal rainfall which will be spatially well-distributed over the country during the upcoming Southwest monsoon season, according to IMD.
  • The IMD upgraded the country’s seasonal rainfall to 101 per cent of the Long Period Average. In its first stage LRF released in early April, the All India seasonal rainfall was predicted to be 98 per cent of the LPA.
  • The country receives over 70 per cent rainfall during June to September and is vital for the Kharif and overall agriculture-based activities.
  • For the first time, the IMD issued a special forecast for the Monsoon Core Zone — spanning most of the central India regions between Odisha and Gujarat.

New Chief appointed for Andaman and Nicobar command

  • Lt. Gen. Ajai Singh assumed charge as the 16th Commanding-in-Chief of the Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC), the only tri-service command of the armed forces based at Port Blair.
  • Lt. Gen. Singh has had the privilege of tenanting various appointments across all six of the Army’s geographical Commands as well as at the Army training command.
  • Lt. Gen. Pradeep Chandran Nair took over as the 21st Director General of the Assam Rifles, the paramilitary force popularly known as Sentinels of the Northeast.

Swapan Dasgupta renominated to Rajya Sabha

  • Swapan Dasgupta, who had resigned from his nominated membership of the Rajya Sabha to fight the elections on a BJP ticket, has been re-nominated to the Upper House.
  • Prominent lawyer Mahesh Jethmalani was also nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the President. The President nominates renowned personalities to the Upper House on the advice of the government.
  • The nominated members are drawn from fields such as literature, science, sports, art and social service.
  • Dasgupta had resigned in March after the Trinamool Congress cited constitutional rules to say a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha could not join a political party or participate in its activities.

Iran’s largest Navy ship sinks in Gulf of Oman

  • The largest ship in the Iranian navy caught fire and later sank in the Gulf of Oman under unclear circumstances. The ship is named Kharg after the island that serves as the main oil terminal for Iran.
  • The Kharg serves as one of a few vessels in the Iranian navy capable of providing replenishment at sea for its other ships. It also can lift heavy cargo and serve as a launch point for helicopters.
  • The ship was built in Britain and launched in 1977. It entered the Iranian navy in 1984 after lengthy negotiations that followed Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution.
  • The sinking of the Kharg marks the latest naval disaster for Iran. In 2020 during an Iranian military training exercise, a missile mistakenly struck a naval vessel near the port of Jask.
