Congo declares state of siege

  • Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi has declared a state of siege over the worsening violence in the eastern provinces.
  • A surge in attacks by armed militias and inter-communal violence in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo have killed over 300 people since the start of the year.
  • A Ugandan insurgent faction active in eastern Congo since the 1990s called the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) is believed to be responsible for much of the recent bloodshed.

  • Journalist and senior news anchor Rohit Sardana passed away due to cardiac arrest, days after he tested positive for Covid-19. He was 41.
  • Sardana was an executive editor and TV news anchor with Aaj Tak of the India Today Group.

Former RJD MP and gangster Mohammad Shahabuddin dies

  • Former Rashtriya Janata Dal MP Mohammad Shahabuddin, who was lodged in Tihar jail, died of COVID-19 in Delhi. He was 53.
  • Shahabuddin was serving life imprisonment in Tihar and tested positive on April 20 and was admitted to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital.
  • Shahbuddin is among the high profile inmates along with gangster Chhota Rajan who have tested positive for COVID-19 inside the jail .

‘Shooter Dadi’ Chandro Tomar passes away

  • Shooter Chandro Tomar, nicknamed ‘Shooter Dadi’, passed away at the age of 89 due to Covid-19. She had been admitted to a hospital after she had complained of difficulty breathing.
  • Hailing from the Baghpat village in Uttar Pradesh, Tomar was 60-plus when she picked up the gun for the first time but went on to win many national competitions for veterans.
  • She shot into worldwide fame after the release of Tapasee Pannu and Bhumi Pednekar starrer 'Saand Ki Aankh', based on a real life story of the two oldest shooters.

  • Sitar maestro Pandit Devbrata Chaudhuri died of Covid-related complications at a Delhi hospital. He was 85.
  • The sitarist, among India’s best known, belonged to the Senia Gharana of music. He had been awarded the Padma Bhushan and the Padma Shri.
  • Pandit Debu Chaudhuri performed across the world for over six decades, winning several honours, including the Padma Bhushan, the Padma Shri and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution in the field of music.
