Kumar Sangakkara named first non-British MCC president

  • Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara became first non-British to be appointed as President of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), England.
  • Sangakkara will take up post in October 2019 and will serve this position for period of 1 year (12 months).
  • He is already an active member of World Cricket Committee of MCC since 2012, and also owns Honorary Life Membership of club (bestowed in 2012).
  • Marylebone Cricket Club: It is a cricket club based at the Lord's Cricket Ground in St John's Wood, London, England. It was founded in 1787.
  • It is owner of Lord’s Ground as well. It acts as guardian of laws of the Cricket. It is the copyright holder of the Laws of Cricket.

World Tuna Day: May 2

  • The World Tuna Day is observed every year on 2 May to raise awareness about importance of tuna fish and to promote more sustainable fishing practices.
  • It was officially designated by United Nations General Assembly in December 2016 by adopting resolution 71/124. It was first observed on 2 May 2017.
  • Its purpose was to underline importance of conservation management to ensure that we have systems in place to prevent tuna stocks from crashing.
  • Tuna resources are important for food security and nutrition, economic development, employment, government revenue, livelihoods, culture etc of many countries.
  • At present, over 96 countries are involved in conservation and management of tuna with an annual value of almost US $10 billion at landing.

Google to allow users auto-delete location history, web activity

  • Search giant Google has announced that it will soon roll out new feature that will allow users auto-delete their location history and web and app activity permanently from Google’s records.
  • In this new feature, Google will introduce bunch of settings, allowing users to delete all data older than either 3 months of 18 months.
  • Once this feature is turned on, data that is older than 3 months or 18 months, depending on choice of the user, will be deleted automatically.
  • Significance: It will be a major milestone for internet privacy and Google has gone step ahead to assure users' data is not misused or harvested without consent.

Netherlands: 3rd largest source of FDI in India

  • Netherlands became third largest source of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in India during 2017-18, with total investment of US $2.67 billion across all sectors.
  • Mauritius and Singapore are top two source countries for FDI in India during 2017-18 with investment of US $13.41 billion and US $9.27 billion respectively.
  • After Singapore, Netherlands was second largest destination for foreign investment by Indian companies (outwards FDI) with investment of US $12.8 billion in 2017-18.
  • The bilateral trade between India and Netherlands was US $8.77 billion in 2017-18. Indian exports to Netherlands have ground 14.7%%and imports by 18.2% during this period.

India-China border personnel meetings on LAC

  • Indian and Chinese Army held border personnel meetings (BPMs) on the line of actual control (LAC) in Ladakh division of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K).
  • The ceremonial bpm was held at Chinese BPM huts at Moldo and TWT meeting points opposite eastern Ladakh.
  • The ceremonial meeting was marked by saluting the National flag by members of the delegations.
