South Korea won 2019 Sultan Azlan Shah Hockey tournament

  • South Korean team won 2019 Sultan Azlan Shah Hockey tournament, held at Ipoh in Malaysia. In the final match, it defeated five time champion India in a penalty shootout by 4-2 goals.
  • Till stipulated time both teams scored 1 goal each, with India leading with one goal till half time.
  • Simaranjit Singh hit goal for India and Jang Jong Hyun scored goal for South Korea. Hosts Malaysia secured the 3rd place after defeating Canada 4-2. Japan stood at 5th place.

Dr Rajendra Joshi conferred Pravasi Bhartiya Samman Award

  • Swiss-based NRI scientist Dr. Rajendra Joshi, native of Rajasthan, was given 2019 Pravasi Bhartiya Samman Award (PBSA) by President Ram Nath Kovind.
  • He was honored for his achievement in field of Science, in promoting honor and prestige of India and in fostering interests of Overseas Indians.
  • He is credited for developing Tecfidera (BG12), a path-breaking medicine for multiple sclerosis.
  • The theme of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2019 convention was “Role of Indian Diaspora in building New India”. It was held January 2019 in Varanasi and Delhi.

Manu Gulati awarded 2019 Martha Farrell Award

  • Manu Gulati, a Delhi government school teacher, was honored with Martha Farrell Award, 2019 in 'Most Promising Individual' category.
  • She was awarded for her decades of service in enabling a gender-neutral society by coaching boys and girls in Delhi schools.
  • Martha Farrell awards is given in memory of Martha Farrell, who was a passionate civil society leader, renowned and respected in India and globally for her work on women's rights, gender equality and adult education.
  • It is given in two categories - 'Most Promising Individual' and 'Best Organization for Gender Equality', to individuals and organizations working toward gender equality issues.
  • In 2nd category, 2019 award went to Mahila Jan Adhikar Samiti (MJAS), a women-led organisation which started as a collective of rural women and, transitioned it into a registered organisation in 2000 to fight against domestic violence.

Enajori initiative for PwD launched in Assam

  • Mukesh Sahu, Assam’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) launched Enajori initiative in Guwahati for Persons with Disability (PwD).
  • This special initiative is with joint efforts of CEO Assam and Social Welfare Department (SWD) with objective to make 2019 Lok Sabha Elections accessible to Persons with Disability (PwD) voters so that 'No Voter to be Left behind'.
  • Under it, PwDs will be mapped comprehensively in consultation with Booth Level Officers, Divyang Sarothis and a woman mascot-Chandraprabha, so as to provide PwD voters for barrier-free and inclusive accessible elections.
  • As initiative is undertaken to make Braille voter slips and Braille ballot paper to facilitate blind voters, SWD will conduct a sensitization programmes to make the PwD voters aware about Braille system.

Vijay Chandok appointed MD and CEO of ICICI Securities

  • The Executive Director of ICICI Bank, Vijay Chandok has been appointed as MD and CEO of ICICI Securities, a subsidiary of ICICI bank. He will succeed Shilpa Naval Kumar.
  • He joined ICICI Group in 1993 and is presently he is on boards of ICICI Bank UK PLC and ICICI Bank Canada and is Chairman of ICICI Investment Management Company.
  • Under his leadership, ICICI Bank was awarded ‘India’s Best Bank in SME Financing’ (private sector), 2008 by Dun & Bradstreet and ‘Excellence in SME Banking in Asia Pacific, Central Asia and Gulf Region’, 2009 by Asian Banker Award.
