Former French President Nicolas Sarkozyconvicted of corruption

  • A Paris court has found French former President Nicolas Sarkozy guilty of corruption and influence peddling and sentenced him to one year in prison and a two-year suspended sentence.
  • Sarkozy was president from 2007 to 2012 and was convicted for having tried to illegally obtain information from a senior magistrate in 2014 about a legal action in which he was involved.
  • Sarkozy withdrew from active politics after failing to be chosen as his conservative party’s presidential candidate for France’s 2017 election.
  • He remains very popular amid right-wing votersand plays a major role behind the scenes, including through maintaining a relationship with Macron.

Mt Sinabungerupts

  • Indonesia’s Mount Sinabung volcano has started spewing cloud of hot ash, in its first big eruption since August last year.
  • Mount Sinabung’s activity has increased since August last year and the alert for the volcano in North Sumatra province has been placed at second highest level.
  • No casualties were reported as officials had earlier urged people to stay at least 3 km from the crater.
  • Indonesia straddles the “Pacific ring of fire” with nearly130 active volcanoes, more than any other country.Sinabung had been inactive for centuries before it erupted again in 2010.

Exotic earthworm found in Karnataka

  • An exotic and highly invasive earthworm — Amynthasalexandri of the Megascolecidae family — has been collected and reported for the first time from Karnataka.
  • Its original home is believed to be Southeast Asia. Their distribution in Asia earlier was in China, Myanmar, Pakistan and Thailand.
  • It has been found to be distributed at four sites in the State — Hosabale and Hosanagara in Shivamogga district, Kaimara in Chikkamagaluru district, and Konaje in Dakshina Kannada.
  • Amynthasalexandri is a medium-to-large-sized worm and its colour is brownish in light and dark at dorsum. Its length varies from 132 mm to 169 mm, and it is 5 mm to 6 mm in diameter.
  • Earthworms are important for maintaining the soil fertility of forests, grasslands, and agro-ecosystems.

Madhya Pradesh MP Nand Kumar Singh Chauhan dies

  • Nand Kumar Singh Chauhan, the BJP Lok Sabha member from Khandwa in Madhya Pradesh, passed away in Gurugram.He was 69.
  • The six-term MP was suffering from COVID-19 and was airlifted to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram last month in a serious condition.
  • The leader started his political career in 1978 from the Shahpur Municipal Council and was later elected as member of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly. He was an MLA from 1985 to 1996.
  • He was elected as the Lok Sabha member for the first time in 1996 and got re-elected in 1998, 1999, 2004, 2014 and 2019.

Sri Lanka clears Indian investment in another terminal in Colombo port

  • Sri Lanka said it will develop the West Container Terminal (WCT) at the Colombo Port along with India and Japan.
  • This is a significant change from previous policy when the two partners were ejected from a 2019 tripartite agreement to jointly develop the East Container Terminal (ECT), amid port unions' resistance to “foreign involvement”.
  • While India has named Adani Ports, which was earlier nominated to invest in the ECT, Japan is yet to respond.
  • After Sri Lanka reneged on the 2019 agreement, it offered the WCT as an alternative, allowing the foreign investors to hold a higher stake.
  • In the ECT project agreed upon earlier, the Sri Lanka Ports Authority was to hold 51 % stakes. In the WCT proposal, India and Japan will be accorded 85 % stakes.
