Respirator that picks atmospheric oxygen

  • A professor of Physics at Madurai Kamaraj University has come up with a prototype of a unique respiratory mask that can pick up oxygen from the atmosphere for the wearer.
  • The ventilator-cum-respiratory mask ensures more than 40% of atmospheric oxygen is available within the mask.
  • Called LIDS-VR mask, it contains sensors to regulate the level of oxygen. The device contains a nanomaterial that can absorb oxygen. It requires energy to release the oxygen for the wearer.
  • The respirator could be used when a sick patient is waiting for ambulance or by festival shoppers at a heavily crowded mall.  This is particularly helpful for asthmatic persons. It can also be used in aeroplanes.

Former union minister Buta Singh dies

  • Senior Congress leader and former Home Minister Buta Singh died in Delhi early. He was 86 and had been in coma since October last year.
  • A lifelong Congress member, Mr. Singh started his political career with the Shiromani Akali Dal before joining the Congress. A
  • He was a eight-time Lok Sabha MP and he entered Parliament in 1962 from Moga Lok Sabha constituency in Punjab.
  • He was considered her close confidant and was involved in Operation Blue Star. Later as a Union Minister he was also involved in reconstruction of the Golden Temple.
  • In 1981, he was made the Chairperson of the Organising Committee for Asian Games, the first major international games to come to India.
  • Among other roles, between 1986-89 he was the country’s Home Minister. The last public office he held was the post of Chairman of National Commission for Schedule Caste till 2010.

Ice age woolly Rhino fossil discovered

  • A well-preserved Ice Age woolly rhino with many of its internal organs still intact has been recovered from permafrost in Russia’s extreme north.
  • It’s among the best-preserved specimens of the Ice Age animal found to date. The carcass has most of its soft tissues still intact, including part of the intestines, thick hair, and a lump of fat. Its horn was found next to it.
  • Recent years have seen major discoveries of mammoths, woolly rhinos, Ice Age foal, and cave lion cubs as the permafrost increasingly melts across vast areas of Siberia because of global warming.
  • Scientists dated the carcass as anywhere from 20,000- to 50,000-years-old. More precise dating will be possible once it is delivered to a lab for radiocarbon studies.

Massive wildfires in Dzukou valley

  • The Manipur government pressed into service helicopters to help firefighters and local volunteers extinguish the raging wildfire in Dzukou Valley located along the Nagaland-Manipur border.
  • Officials said there was no human casualty. However, wildlife activists say that many wild animals could have been killed or captured while fleeing.
  • Local sources said that the some persons might have deliberately started the wildfire for personal gains.
  • Tribals burn down forest areas for hunting the terrified wild animals and doing shifting cultivation. There are some disputes between Manipur and Nagaland which also lays claim to the valley.

Goa’s Leon Mendonca becomes latest grandmaster

  • Goa’s 14-year-old Leon Mendonca has become India’s 67th chess Grandmaster by winning the third and final norm at a tournament in Italy.
  • Mendonca, who achieved the feat at 14 years, 9 months, and 17 days, is the second GM from the coastal State of Goa.
  • The player achieved his first GM norm at the Rigo Chess GM Round Robin in October while the second came at the first event in Budapest in November and the final one at the Vergani Cup in Italy.
  • At the Vergani Cup in Bassano del Grappa, he finished second with 6.5 points behind Ukraine’s Vitaliy Bernadskiy (7 points). Chennai player G. Akash, had in July, become the country’s 66th GrandVitaliy
