Delhi cicketer Manjot Kalra banned for age fraud

  • Manjot Kalra, who scored a hundred in the final of the last edition of U-19 World Cup, has been suspended for one year from playing Ranji Trophy, for an alleged age-fraud during his U-16 and U-19 days.
  • For the same offence, Delhi senior team vice-captain Nitish Rana has been let off for the time being with more documents being sought to prove that he fudged his age at the junior level.
  • Another U-19 star Shivam Mavi's case has been referred to the BCCI since he now represents Uttar Pradesh in senior cricket.

India to host 36th Geological congress

  • India will host the 36th International Geological Congress (IGC) in the capital during the first week of March.
  • The theme of the forthcoming conference is ‘Geosciences: The Basic Science for a Sustainable Development”.
  • The IGCs are a prestigious global geoscientific events held once in four years and participated by around 5000-6000 geoscientists from all across the world. It is called Olympics of Geosciences.
  • Geological Survey of India is the nodal agency for organizing the event. India is the only Asian country to host the event twice. In 1964, India had hosted it for the first time, which was the 22nd IGC.

Denmark records 47% of electricity from wind energy

  • Wind accounted for 47% of Denmark’s power usage in 2019, up from 41% in 2018 and topping the previous record of 43% in 2017.
  • Denmark sourced almost half its electricity consumption from wind power in 2019, a new record boosted by steep cost reductions and improved offshore technology.
  • European countries are global leaders in using wind power but Denmark is far in front of nearest rival Ireland, which sourced 28% of its power from wind in 2018.

Kota infants' death

  • At least 91 infants have died at the government run JK Lone hospital during the past month.
  • A three-member state government committee of doctors was sent to investigate the death of the infants.
  • The state government panel found that the hospital was short of beds, functioning at 150 per cent of its capacity.
  • It was observed that the incubators were used beyond capacity due to higher number of premature children, who were brought to the hospital in serious condition.

RBI launches MANI app for visually challenged people

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has launched a mobile app, MANI, to help visually-impaired people to identify the denomination of currency notes.
  • The application can scan the currency notes using the camera of the mobile phone. It also gives audio output in Hindi and English. It can be used without internet once installed.
  • The RBI also said the app does not authenticate a note as either genuine or counterfeit.
