Fashion brands contributing to destruction of Amazon rainforest

  • New research has shed light on the negative contribution of fast fashion brands and design houses to the largest scale deforestation in the Amazon rainforest.
  • JBS, the largest beef/leather company in Brazil as one of the largest contributors of deforestation in the Amazon.
  • These findings directly contradict and challenge the policies recently announced by a number of brands included in the survey against sourcing leather from deforestation.

November air in Delhi most polluted in six years

  • The average air quality index for the month of November this year has been the worst in six years, going by data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
  • The average AQI for November this year was 377. The corresponding figure for 2020 was 327, while the air in November 2019 was also cleaner with an average AQI of 312.
  • In 2018, the AQI for November was 334, while November 2017 recorded an AQI of 360. The AQI for November 2016 was 374, only marginally lower than this year’s figure.
  • This year, there were 11 ‘severe’ air days in November, higher than nine last year, seven in 2019, and five in 2018.

Uttarakhand to repeal Char DhamDevasthanam Board

  • The Uttrakhand government has announced the withdrawal of Uttarakhand Char DhamDevasthanam Management Act.
  • The Bill, aimed at bringing the ‘Char Dham’ or the four shrines of Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri, besides 49 other temples, under the purview of a proposed shrine Board,
  • The shrine board is the highest governing body for the management of the 53 temples and has powers to frame policies, formulate the budget and sanction expenditure, among others.

NHAI to build flyover to facilitate elephant movement in Odisha

  • The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) will build a one-kilometre-long flyover exclusively for elephant herds so that jumbos can cross the busy highway unhindered beneath the structure in Odisha.
  • The proposed flyover is the first of its kind structure to be created, keeping the smooth movement of elephants in mind in the State.
  • The flyover for elephants will come up between Rairakhol and Sambalpur. Vehicular traffic will move on the flyover while elephants will take their traditional path underneath the structure.

Gujarat becomes largest manufacturing hub in the country

  • Gujarat has emerged as the biggest manufacturing hub in India with the state’s Gross Value Addition (GVA) in manufacturing growing at 15.9 per cent annually.
  • Maharashtra’s annual growth rate during the period was 7.5 per cent. Maharashtra continues to lead as the nation’s biggest services hub.
  • The worst performers among states which were already among the top ten manufacturing states during the period were Rajasthan, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
