Holiday declared in Delhi schools due to pollution

  • The Delhi government has ordered shutting of schools till November 5 owing to alarming level of pollution in the city.
  • The air quality in Delhi-NCR deteriorated further and is now at the severe level which has forced the government to take measures to prevent citizens from getting affected.
  • The supreme court has also banned all construction related activity in the region till November 5 in order to improve the air quality.

GST collection remains low

  • The Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection in October declined to 95,380 crore, as against 1,00,710 crore in the same month a year ago, as per government data.
  • This is the third consecutive month when GST mop-up remained below the 1 lakh crore mark, despite October being a festive month.
  • The revenue collection in September stood at  91,916 crore.

India and Germany football co-operation

  • The All India Football Federation (AIFF) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with its German counterpart, DFB. The signing of the agreement coincided with German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s visit to India.
  • The MoU covers a wide range of areas pertaining to Indian football such as coach education (including grassroots), talent scouting and promotion, deployment of professional referees to India, exchange between national teams etc.
  • Germany is renowned for its footballing prowess, and the work done by them at the grassroots level can help India to emulate it at domestic level.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s visit to India

  • German Chancellor Angela Merkel arrived in India for a two-day visit during which she will hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on a host of bilateral issues and also sign around 20 MoUs.
  • Angela Merkel will co-chair the fifth IGC alongside PM Modi. Under the IGC format, the counterpart ministers from both countries will hold initial discussions in their respective areas of responsibility.
  • Germany is India's largest trading partner in Europe and India was ranked 25th in Germany's global trade during 2018.
  • Germany is the seventh-largest foreign direct investor in India since April 2000.

80% of Indian adults suffer from hidden hunger

  • According to UNICEF report over 80 per cent adolescents in India suffer from "hidden hunger", a form of under nutrition, and less than 10 per cent of boys and girls consume fruits and eggs daily.
  • The new report reveals that almost all adolescents in India have unhealthy or poor diets and it is the main cause for all forms of malnutrition.
  • The report also observed more girls suffer from shortness than boys. Anaemia affects 40 per cent of adolescent girls, compared to 18 per cent of boys, and worsens as they get older.
  • Hidden hunger is a deficiency of one or more micronutrients such as iron, folate, zinc, vitamin A, vitamin B12 and vitamin D.
