Justice Mishra likely to head NHRC

  • Former Supreme Court judge Arun Kumar Mishra will be new chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) after a high-powered recommendation committee proposed his name.
  • Former Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court, Mahesh Mittal Kumar, and former Director of Intelligence Bureau, Rajiv Jain, had also been recommended by the high-powered panel as members of the NHRC.
  • The selection panel consisted of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Harivansh, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge.

China announces three child policy

  • China announced that each couple would be permitted to have up to three children, a major policy shift from the existing limit of two children.The change was approved during a politburo meeting chaired by President Xi Jinping.
  • In 2016, China scrapped its decades-old one-child policy with a two-child limit, which failed to result in a sustained surge in births as the high cost of raising children in Chinese cities deterred many couples from starting families.
  • The labour pool is shrinking and the population is graying, threatening the industrial strategy that China has used for decades to emerge from poverty to become an economic powerhouse.

Delhi High court dismisses plea to halt Central Vista project

  • The Delhi high court has dismissed a plea that sought direction to suspend all construction activity of the Central Vista Avenue Redevelopment Project.
  • The bench dismissed the plea saying the petition was "motivated" and "not a genuine PIL". The bench imposed a cost of ? 1 lakh on the petitioners.
  • The court said that the work had to be completed by November 2021 and, therefore, it should be allowed to continue. The legality of the project was already upheld by the Supreme Court.

Centre allows resumption of oxygen use for industrial purpose

  • The government has temporarily permitted the resumption of oxygen supply for industrial use by several sectors, including firms producing oxygen cylinders, copper, aluminium, steel as well as exporters and food processing units.
  • Infrastructure projects and micro, small and medium enterprises have also been allowed to use liquid oxygen.
  • The Centre had invoked the Disaster Management Act to limit oxygen supplies for industrial use, and subsequently strengthened the curbs by directing all oxygen stocks to be diverted for medical purposes.
  • The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) had urged the Home Ministry to consider resuming oxygen supplies for micro, small and medium enterprises, infrastructure projects, exporters, food processing units.

WhatsApp names Paresh B Lal as grievance officer

  • WhatsApp has appointed Paresh B Lal as its grievance officer for India. Facebook-owned WhatsApp was updating the details of the new grievance officers appointed, to replace the existing information on its platform.
  • The move comes in the backdrop of the new IT rules coming into effect last week that require significant social media intermediaries to appoint a grievance officer, nodal officer and a chief compliance officer. These personnel are required to be resident in India.
  • Large digital companies like Google have begun updating their websites to reflect the appointment of grievance officers as per the new social media rules.
  • The grievance officer will have to acknowledge the complaint within 24 hours and dispose of such complaint within a period of 15 days from the date of its receipt, and receive and acknowledge any order, notice or direction issued by the authorities.
