Tamil Cinematographer KV Anand passes away

  • Tamil director-cinematographer KV Anand passed away in Chennai due to Covid-19 related complications. He was 54.
  • He had directed films such as Kana Kandaen, Ayan, Ko, Maattrraan, Anegan, Kavan and Kaappaan. The cinematographer, film director and former photo journalist worked mainly in the Tamil Film Industry.
  • Anand won the National Film Award for Best Cinematography for his debut film as a cinematographer, Thenmavin Kombath. He is the founding member of the Indian Society of Cinematographers (ISC).

World’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge built in Portugal

  • The world's longest pedestrian suspension bridge has just opened in Portugal. Designed by Portuguese studio Itecons, it took three years to build.
  • It's in the eastern part of the Geopark, close to Paiva Walkways, Areinho and Vau river beaches, and the villages of Alvarenga, Canelas and Espiunca.
  • Arouca 516 has stolen the longest pedestrian suspension bridge title from the Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge in Switzerland.
  • The longest pedestrian suspension bridge in the United States is the SkyBridge in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, which stretches 680 feet across a valley in the Great Smoky Mountains.

Covaxin offers protection against Indian double mutant variant

  • A study has found that people who have been vaccinated with Covaxin have protection against the double mutant (B.1.617) variant first found in India.
  • So far, 21 countries have detected the B.1.617 variant. Of those, the majority of cases has been reported from India.
  • The researchers used the sera collected from 28 people who had participated in the Covaxin phase-2 trial. They also collected sera samples from 17 people who were infected with older strains of SARS-CoV-2 virus and had recovered.
  • An earlier study had found that Covaxin neutralises the B.1.1.7 variant first found in the U.K.

Rahul Bajaj steps down as chairman of Bajaj motors

  • Rahul Bajaj has resigned from his position of non-executive director and chairman at Bajaj Auto. He will be replaced by Niraj Bajaj, non-executive director of the company, with effect from May 1, 2021.
  • Rahul Bajaj oversaw the successful transition of Bajaj Auto from the “Hamara Bajaj days” through its popular Chetak brand of scooters to World’s Favourite Indian.
  • Last year, Bajaj had stepped down as executive chairman and whole-time director at Bajaj Auto, moving out from active role after nearly half-a-century leading one of the country’s most popular and loved two-wheeler brand.

Former Attorney general Soli Sorabjee passes away

  • Eminent jurist and former Attorney General of India Soli Sorabjee passed away due to COVID-19 complications.
  • Mr. Sorabjee was born on March 9, 1930 in erstwhile Bombay to a Parsi family. He was a product of the St. Xavier’s College and the Government Law College. He was admitted to the Bar in 1953.
  • He appeared in several historic cases, including the Kesavananda Bharati case or the Basic Structure Doctrine case. He received the Padma Vibhushan for championing free speech and human rights.
  • He worked for the Sikh community pro bono after the 1984 riots. He was appointed an Honorary Member of the Order of Australia.
