India has slipped 28 places to rank 140th among 156 countries in the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report 2021.
India has closed 62.5% of its gender gap till date.The country had ranked 112th among 153 countries in the Global Gender Gap Index 2020.
Most of the decline occurred on the political empowerment subindex, where India regressed 13.5 percentage points, with a significant decline in the number of women ministers (from 23.1% in 2019 to 9.1% in 2021).
Discrimination against women is also reflected in the health and survival subindex statistics. With 93.7% of this gap closed to date, India ranks among the bottom five countries in this subindex.
A new political outfit will be launched p by former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, who had rebelled against Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli in the now defunct Nepal Communist Party.
The decision to create a new political outfit was taken in the second week of March after PM Oli went ahead and held a meeting of the Central Committee of the party.
The Nepal Communist Party was scrapped by the Supreme Court, which ordered that the two political formations of Communist Party of Nepal-UML and CPN (Maoist-Centre) that had united to form the NCP in 2018 should revert to their original forms.
Retired bureaucrat Nilam Sawhney has assumed office of Andhra Pradesh State Election Commissioner. She had served as Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh till December 2020.
The State government sent names of three retired IAS officers to Governor Biswa Bushan Harichandan. The Governor appointed Ms. Sawhney as the SEC.
Ms. Sawhney is a 1984 batch IAS officer from Andhra Pradesh cadre and was supposed to superannuate on June 30, 2020, but she got an extension as the Chief Secretary. She was the first woman chief secretary in AP. Now, she will be the first woman SEC.
Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar, who served as SEC till March 31, 2021, became the first SEC of AP after the State bifurcation in 2014.
