  • Senior Congress leader and former Himachal Pradesh minister Gurmukh Singh Bali passed away in New Delhi.
  • Bali was born in Kangra on July 27, 1954. He started his political career in the Congress Seva Dal. He was the state head of the Seva Dal from 1995-98.
  • He was elected to the state assembly from NagrotaBagwan constituency for the first time in 1998 and re-elected in 2003. He was the transport minister in the Virbhadra Singh-led Congress government.

US plans to compensate families separated at border

  • The Biden administration is in talks to offer immigrant families that were separated during the Trump administration around $450,000 a person in compensation.
  • The U.S. Departments of Justice, Homeland Security, and Health and Human Services are considering payments that could amount to close to $1 million a family.
  • Most of the families that crossed the border illegally from Mexico to seek asylum in the U.S. Many families would likely get smaller payouts, depending on their circumstances.

Research indicates King Cobra has four different lineages

  • New research by a wildlife biologist has found that the king cobra has four different lineages which are geographically separate and are found in the Western Ghats, Indo-Chinese region, Indo-Malayan region and Luzon in the Philippines.
  • The king cobra has so far been considered a monotypic genus, which means the most venomous snake all over the world was thought to be a single species under the genus Ophiophagus.
  • The team analysed the DNA of king cobras from across and discovered that they were not a single species, but composed of four divergent lineages.
