NASA’s Lucy mission to probe Jupiter’s Trojan asteroids

  • NASA is poised to send its first spacecraft Lucy to study Jupiter’s Trojan asteroids to get insights into the solar system’s formation 4.5 billion years ago.
  • The probe, called Lucy after an ancient fossil that provided insights into the evolution of human species, will launch on October 16 from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.
  • Its mission is to investigate the group of rocky bodies circling the Sun in two swarms, one preceding Jupiter in its orbital path and the other trailing behind it.
  • After receiving boosts from Earth’s gravity, Lucy will embark on a 12-year journey to eight different asteroids – one in the Main Belt between Mars and Jupiter and then seven Trojans.

YouTube blocks all anti-vaccine content

  • YouTube will block all anti-vaccine content, moving beyond its ban on false information about the COVID vaccines to include content that contains misinformation about other approved vaccines.
  • Examples of content that won’t be allowed on YouTube include claims that the flu vaccine causes infertility and that the MMR shot, which protects against measles, mumps, and rubella, can cause autism.
  • The moves come as YouTube and other tech giants like Facebook Inc. and Twitter Inc. have been criticised for not doing enough to stop the spread of false health information on their sites.

Adani group to confirm Colombo Port deal

  • The Adani Group will sign a build-operate-transfer (BOT) agreement with its local partner John Keells Holdings and the Sri Lanka Port Authority (SLPA), to jointly develop its West Container Terminal (WCT).
  • President Gotabaya Rajapaksa announced the involvement of the Adani Group in the WCT, after controversially ejecting India and Japan out of the East Container Terminal (ECT) project.
  • The cancellation of the tripartite agreement on the ECT project was a major cause of strain in bilateral ties, with New Delhi voicing concern over Colombo reneging on a commitment made in 2019.

Pfizer starts study of mRNA Flu vaccine

  • Pfizer Inc said has dosed the first patient in a trial testing a flu vaccine based on messenger RNA, the same technology used in the COVID-19 shots made by the U.S. drugmaker and BioNTech.
  • The early-stage trial, conducted in the United States, will test the vaccine in healthy adults ages 65- 85.
  • The study will test the safety and immune responses of the vaccine, compared to another FDA-approved influenza vaccine.

Hockey player Rupinder Pal Singh announces retirement

  • Indian Hockey player Rupinder Pal Singh has announced his retirement from hockey at the age of 30.
  • The 30-year-old Rupinder, regarded as one of the best drag-flickers of the country, represented India in 223 matches.
  • Rupinder was an intergral part of the Indian hockey team that won the bronze medal in the Tokyo Games this year, ending a 41-year-old medal drought for the eight-time Olympic champions.
