Sumit Antil wins gold in Paralympics javelin

  • Sumit Antil set a new world record to win the gold medal in the men’s javelin throw (F64) event at the ongoing Tokyo Paralympics.
  • With the best throw of 68.85 m in the final in Japan, he took India’s medal count to 7.Sumit began with a throw of 66.95m to top the standings after round 1 and set a new world record.
  • He then consolidated his position with his second throw of 68.08m and smashed the previous world record. In the third and fourth throws, respectively, he threw 65.27m and 66.71.

Nine supreme court judges take oath

  • Nine new Supreme Court judges, including three women, were administered their oaths of office by Chief Justice NV Ramana.
  • This is the first time in the history of India’s highest court that nine judges have been sworn in at one time. The ceremony was held in the court complex’s auditorium building.
  • The new judges include Justice Abhay Oka (former Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court), Justice VikramNath (former Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court), Justice Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari (former Chief Justice of Sikkim and Andhra Pradesh High Courts) and Justice HimaKohli (former Chief Justice of Telangana High Court).
  • Three out of these nine new judges – Justices Nath, Nagarathna and Narasimha – are also in line to become the CJI.

China restricts time for minors to spend in online games

  • Chinese regulators slashed the amount of time players under the age of 18 can spend on online games to an hour of gameplay, in response to growing concern over gaming addiction.
  • The rulessaid users under the age of 18 will only be able to play games from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. local time on those days.
  • Online gaming companies will be barred from providing gaming services to them in any form outside those hours and need to ensure they have put real name verification systems in place.
  • Previously, China limited the total length of time minors could access online games to three hours on holiday or 1.5 hours on other days.

Israel and Palestine hold talks

  • Israel’s defence minister has announced a series of gestures aimed at strengthening the Palestinian Authority, including plans to loan $150m to the cash-strapped government.
  • The announcement came a day after Defence Minister Benny Gantz met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the first high-level meeting between the two sides in years.
  • The stepped-up contacts and Israeli gestures mark a shift in direction after the complete breakdown of communication between Abbas and Israeli leaders in recent years.

US troops completely depart from Afghanistan

  • The United States completed its military withdrawal from Afghanistan after a huge but chaotic airlift of its servicemen and several Afghan citizens.
  • American troops faced the daunting task of getting final evacuees onto planes while also getting themselves and some of their equipment out.
  • The last C-17 took off and confirmed that all U.S. service members and troops from the Afghan military force along with their families were also airlifted.
