Adani agrees to acquire stake in Mumbai airport

  • Adani Enterprises Ltd. has announced that it has agreed to acquire majority stake in the company that runs the Mumbai International Airport. With this, Adani also will get control of the new airport coming up at Navi Mumbai.
  • The GVK ADL is the holding company through which the GVK Group holds 50.50% equity stake in Mumbai International Airport Ltd. (MIAL), which in turns holds 74% equity stake in Navi Mumbai International Airport Limited (NMIAL).
  • The Adani Group will also take steps to complete the acquisition of a 23.5% equity stake from ACSA and Bidvest in MIAL for which it has obtained CCI approval.

Lyon win Women’s Champions league title

  • Lyon extended its European dominance by beating Wolfsburg 3-1 to win its fifth straight women’s Champions League title.
  • It was the fourth final between the two clubs, and their third in the last five years. Wolfsburg's only triumph over Lyon came in the first final between the teams in 2013.
  • It was Wolfsburg’s first loss in 41 games, since a 4-2 home defeat in the Champions League quarterfinals against Lyon in March 2019. Lyon still hasn’t lost a competitive match since the French Cup final against Paris Saint-Germain in May 2018.

Ban on international flights extended till September end

  • The ban on international commercial flights operating to and from India has been extended till midnight September 30. The ban was earlier scheduled to end tonight.
  • The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has said the restrictions will not apply to international all-cargo flights and flights especially approved by the regulator. However, international scheduled flights may be allowed on select routes by the competent authority on a case-to-case basis.
  • The government has, however, established air bubbles with Germany, US, UK, France and the UAE, among others, to allow the designated carriers of these countries to fly into India and carry back passengers. Indian private carriers and Air India have been operating flights to take Indians and foreigners to various parts of the world.

India and Russia declared joint winners of International Chess Olympiad

  • India were awarded the Chess Olympiad gold medal jointly with Russia after a frantic finish to Sunday's final.
  • India were initially declared to have lost the final round but they lodged an appeal saying their players lost internet connection due to a server failure. The decision was then reversed.
  • India’s quarterfinal victory against Armenia had also been dogged by similar complaints of a server crash. Armenian players had lodged an appeal saying they had lost internet connection but the appeal had been turned down.

Census and NPR unlikely in 2020

  • The first phase of the Census and the exercise to update the National Population Register (NPR)may be delayed by a year as there is no sign of slowdown of the pandemic.
  • The Indian census is one of the largest administrative and statistical exercises in the world, with the involvement of more than 30 lakh officials who would visit each household across the length and breadth of the country.
  • No final decision has been taken on when the first phase of the Census 2021 and NPR update would take place, but it is almost certain that it would not be held in 2020 due to the rising cases of the coronavirus.
