Centre releases GST dues to states

  • The Centre released the entire amount of Goods and Services Tax (GST) compensation payable to States up to May 31, 2022 by releasing an amount of ?86,912 crore.
  • The move is being done to assist the States in managing their resources and ensuring that their programmes, especially the expenditure on capital, is carried out successfully during the financial year.
  • States had been guaranteed a certain level of revenue for the first five years of the GST regime that was launched in 2017.

India post delivers mail using drone in Gujarat

  • Gurugram-based start-up TechEagle has successfully delivered a mail using drone in Gujarat under a pilot project in collaboration with India Post.
  • The first such drone flight delivered the parcel in the Kutch region of Gujarat in less than half an hour, travelling a distance of 46 km, with a five-times faster speed than surface transportation.
  • The pilot project was aimed at testing the operational and technical feasibility of drone deliveries in the region along with commercial scalability.

J&K Panthers party founderBhim Singh passes away

  • Founder of Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party Bhim Singh passed away in Jammu. He was 81.
  • Singh was also a human rights activist, author and a Supreme Court lawyer, who was re-elected unopposed as a senior executive member of the Supreme Court Bar Association.
  • Singh held several key positions in the Congress, from the president of the party’s Jammu and Kashmir youth unit to its national general secretary, before launching his own Panthers Party in October 1982.

EU partially bans Russian oil

  • European Union has partially banned Russian oil imports. The EU is expected to cut oil imports from Russia by 90 per cent by the end of 2022.
  • Europe is the biggest buyer of Russian energy. Russian crude accounted for 27% of the bloc’s imports in 2021. About 35% of that was delivered via pipelines to the bloc.
  • Even though Moscow has been severely sanctioned by the US and the west for its Ukraine adventure, its impact will take a long time to reflect in a country as humongous as Russia.

Canada to restrict handgun sales

  • The Canadian government introduced a new law that, if passed, would implement a “national freeze” on buying, importing, transferring and selling handguns.
  • This is the latest in a series of steps that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has taken to restrict the sale of firearms since 22 persons were killed in Nova Scotia province in 2020.
  • Canada has stricter gun regulations than the US and also does not guarantee citizens a constitutional right to possess arms.
