NITI Aayog suggests National Project Management Policy Framework

  • NITI Aagog task force on project management, headed by Amitabh Kant has suggested development of National Project Management Policy Framewor.
  • The framework aims at effective execution of public sector and public-private partnership infrastructure projects.
  • It has also recommended setting up of nodal body for certification of chartered project management professionals to create world-class infrastructure.
  • It calls for institutionalization of project management for delivering on time and within budget by learning from experience as demonstrated by experiences of US, UK, UAE and China.

NGTS- 4b: Forbidden Planet discovered in Neptunian Desert

  • Astronomers have discovered exoplanet, Next-Generation Transit Survey (NGTS)- 4b, the Forbidden Planet, in the Neptunian Desert.
  • The Forbidden Planet is smaller than Neptune but 3 times the size of the Earth.
  • It has mass of 20 Earth masses, radius 20% smaller than Neptune and temperature of 1000 degree Celsius. It orbits around the star in only 1.3 days and its atmosphere as gases.

India removes restriction on air space usage

  • Indian Air Force (IAF) has removed all temporary restrictions on all air routes in Indian airspace.
  • IAF had imposed restrictions on all air routes following air strikes on terror camp at Balakot in Pakistan on 27th February 2019.
  • India had imposed restrictions that didn’t allow any aircraft flying over Pakistan airspace to use entry or exit points into India.
  • Since February 27 2019 flights on these sectors were taking longer routes leading to an increase in flying time by up to three hours.

Invasive Kappaphycus alvarezii seaweed killing coral reef

  • According to recent study, invasive Kappaphycus alvarezii seaweed, which smothers and kills coral reefs, has spread to coral reef areas in Valai island in Gulf of Mannar (GoM).
  • It is set to invade new coral colonies in GoM marine national park and has resulted in decrease in Macrofaunal and fish density.
  • The study was conducted by Reef Research Team (RRT) of Suganthi Devadason Marine Research Institute (SDMRI), Thoothukudi.
  • It has submitted its report to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFC) by the Reef Research Team (RRT).
  • Kappaphycus alvarezii seaweed is red algae which firmly attaches to coral colonies and forms mat over them. This eventually results in smothering and killing of corals.

Transgender is not mental disorder but sexual health condition: WHO

  • World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that it will no longer categorise transgender as “mental disorder” from its diagnostic manual.
  • In this regard, it has revised International Classification of Diseases (known as ICD-11) to classify gender identity disorders as gender incongruence.
  • Gender incongruence has now been listed under sexual health conditions.  It makes it now clear that gender incongruence is not a mental disorder.
  • This decision will have liberating effect on transgender people worldwide.
