Bangladesh in economic turmoil

  • The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has forecast the headline Consumer Price Index (CPI) in Bangladesh to rise to 5.9% in the fiscal year 2022, due to higher international commodity prices.
  • The price of edible oil, sugar, and eggs have increased sharply, which contributed largely to the inflation.
  • Thousands of people have taken to the streets across Bangladesh this week to protest against the price hike in commodities.

Supreme court strikes down Vaniyarquota

  • The Supreme Court struck down a Tamil Nadu law providing reservation to the Vanniyar community, which is considered one of the most backward in the state.
  • A bench of justices upheld the Madras high court’s November verdict that held the quota to be unconstitutional.
  • The judgement said that the 2021 state law is ultra vires of the Constitution since there was no substantial basis to classify the Vanniyar community as a separate category.
  • The law granting 10.5% reservation to Vanniyars within the 20% quota for Most Backward Classes (MBCs) was passed in February 2021 ahead of the assembly polls.

Gujjar leader KiroriSingh Bainsla passes away

  • Gujjar leader Kirori Singh Bainsla, who led an agitation for getting reservation for the community, passed away. He was 84.
  • Col. Bainsla had retired from the Indian Army. He was part of the war against China in 1962 as well as the India-Pakistan wars in 1965 and 1971.
  • He took up the cause of reservation in jobs and education for Gujjars after his superannuation from the Army.

Forest fire in Sariska tiger reserve

  • A massive fire has broken out in the Sariska Tiger Reserve and Air Force helicopters equipped with water sprays are battling to bring it under control.
  • At least nine tigers, including cubs, are known to move around in the area which has been affected by fire.
  • Since mid-March, large parts of Rajasthan, including Alwar district – home to Sariska Tiger Reserve – have been witnessing heat wave conditions.

SP Balasubramaniam’s unreleased song to be sold as NFT

  • NFT platform Diginoor plans to launch legendary playback singer late S.P. Balasubrahmanyam’s unreleased song as a non-fungible token (NFT).
  • The track, record in Tamil language, was the last devotional track recorded by the singer weeks before he passed away in September 2020.
  • The album titled ‘VishwaroopaDarisanam’ was recorded by SPB in collaboration with leading music label company Symphony Records.
