National Science Day

  • On this day, in 1928, Indian Physicist ChandrasekharaVenkata Raman made an important discovery in the field of spectroscopy, which was later named after him – the Raman Effect.
  • The theme of National Science Day 2022 is ‘Integrated Approach in Science and Technology for Sustainable Future’.

World’s biggest plane destroyed in Ukraine

  • The largest plane in the world – Ukraine’s Antonov-225 cargo plane – was destroyed by Russian strikes outside Kyiv on the fourth day of Moscow’s invasion.
  • The aircraft was unique to the world, at 84 meters long (276 feet) it could transport up to 250 tonnes of cargo at a speed of up to 850 kilometres per hour (528 mph).
  • Known as Mriya, restoring the aircraft would cost over $3 billion (2.7 billion euros) and could take over five years.

Ukraine agrees to talks with Russia

  • President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine agreed to have Ukrainian officials take part in talks with Russia without preconditions.
  • The meeting would take place on the Ukraine- Belarus border on the banks of Pripyat river.
  • EU countries have already begun mobilizing a giant arsenal for Ukraine, including anti-tank weapons, anti-aircraft systems, and rocket-propelled grenade launchers.

West Indies spin legend Sonny Ramadhin passes away

  • Legendary West Indies spinner Sonny Ramadhin, who was a part of the side that won its first away series in England in 1950, has died at the age of 92.
  • Having had made his Test debut against England at Old Trafford in 1950, Ramadhin ended up playing 43 Tests and taking 158 wickets at an average of 28.98.
  • He and fellow spinner Alf Valentine took 59 wickets between them during a 3-1 win in 1950 as members of a WI side that also featured the 3Ws trio – Clyde Walcott, Everton Weekes and Frank Worrell.

Mayank Agarwal appointed captain of Punjab Kings

  • A member of the Indian Test team, Agarwal was one of the two players retained by Punjab Kings alongside young pacer Arshdeep Singh ahead of the mega auction.
  • Agarwal has been an integral part of Punjab Kings since 2018, has served as the squad’s vice-captain and has also briefly led the team last season.
