Cabinet gives permission for exporting Akash missile

  • The Union Cabinet has approved the export of the indigenously developed and manufactured Akash short-range Surface to Air Missile (SAM) system.
  • Besides Akash, there was interest coming in for other major platforms such as the Coastal Surveillance System, radars, and air platforms. For faster approval of export of such platforms, a committee comprising the Defence Minister, the External Affairs Minister, and the National Security Advisor had been created.
  • Akash has a range of 25 km and can simultaneously engage multiple targets in all weather conditions. It has a large operational envelope from a low altitude of 30 metres to a maximum of up to 20 km. It was inducted in 2014 in the Air Force and in 2015 in the Indian Army.

NIIST develops alternative to single use plastic

  • The CSIR-National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (NIIST) here has come up with an alternative to single-use plastics.
  • A huge amount of agricultural residues/by-products are released into the environment from food processing sectors. 
  • Primary agricultural residues are generated as a by-product during the harvesting of agricultural crops while secondary agricultural residues are the leftovers from post-harvest processing.
  • The biodegradable tableware developed from them has a shelf-life of upto six months and heat resistance up to 100 degree celsius. The developed product is found to be ideal for replacing the single-use plastics.

Indian start-up mapping potholes

  • Intents Mobi, a Gurugram-based start-up, is making a navigation app that can send pothole alerts, a feature that is non-existent in Google maps.
  • The app called Intents Go is a free, privacy focussed, navigation app, aimed at making drives safer and easier.
  • The app could update users in real-time on road conditions while driving. It supports voice-guided turn by turn navigation, sends speed breaker alerts, and helps find restaurants, toilets, and mechanics.

Argentina becomes first Latin American country to legalize abortion

  • Argentina became the first major country in Latin America to legalize abortion when the Senate voted to allow it through the 14th week of pregnancy.
  • The ruling could set the tone for a wider shift in conservative Latin America where there are growing calls for greater reproductive rights for women.
  • Across the region, abortions are available on-demand only in Communist Cuba, comparatively tiny Uruguay, and some parts of Mexico.
  • A change in the law was narrowly defeated in a Senate vote in 2018 after being approved in the lower house, but the latest bill was the first to have the backing of the ruling government.

Odia music director Shantanu Mohapatra passes away

  • Legendary Odia music director Shantanu Mohapatra died in Bhubaneswar. He was 84 years old. He was suffering from old age-related ailments and succumbed to pneumonia and cardiac failure.
  • Shantanu Mohapatra was the first Odia music director to work with acclaimed singers and music composers of the Hindi film industry.
  • These included Lata Mangeshkar (Surjyamukhi), Mohd Rafi (Arundhati), Manna Dey (Surjyamukhi), Usha Mangeskar (Arundhati) and other artists like Suresh Wadekar, Anuradha Paudwal, Usha Uthup, Kavita Krishnamurthy, etc.
  • He has also won the highest number of awards and accolades as a music director in Odisha, totalling over 80.
