Growth with inequality

  • The Economic Survey for 2020-21
  • It says that India did best of both saved lives first and then directed its efforts towards saving livelihood.
  • We have managed to flatten the curve, and so far there has been no 2nd wave
  • The survey says that India has turned the crisis into an opportunity
  • Farm Protest
  • MSMEs
  • Informal Sector
  • Forecast - the economy is currently experiencing a V-shaped recovery – growth will be 11% in real terms in 2021-22
  • The document fails in providing data about extent of unemployment
  • The survey seems to privilege wealth creation over all else.

The problem of ageing dams

  • Dams and reservoirs can threaten our water security
  • India’s dams are now ageing
  • Reservoir water is being replaced by soil, technically known as silt or sediment
  • India is ranked third in the world in terms of building large dams.
  • Of the over 5,200 large dams built so far, about 1,100 large dams have already reached 50 years of age and some are older than 120 years.
  • The number of such dams will increase to 4,400 by 2050.
  • Krishna Raja Sagar dam was built in 1931 and is now 90 years old.
  • Similarly, Mettur dam was constructed in 1934 and is now 87 years old.
  • Both these reservoirs are located in the water-scarce Cauvery river basin.

  • The flooding of Bharuch in 2020, Kerala in 2018 and Chennai in 2015 are a few examples attributed to downstream releases from reservoirs.
  • The nation will eventually be unable to find sufficient water in the 21st century to feed the rising population by 2050, grow abundant crops, create sustainable cities, or ensure growth.

Digital (un)democracy | ToI

  • Farmer protests have been met with a painful slowing down of internet services
  • In Haryana mobile internet and SMS services were suspended in 17 districts.
  • Research indicates that digital blackouts encourage rumours not peace
  • Education, health, the public distribution system, banking, every sector becomes collateral damage
  • Indeed digital platforms became lifesavers during the Covid lockdown, facilitating everything from work from home to medical services.
  • Schizophrenia in governance
  • India ranked 129th in the world for mobile internet speed and 65th for broadband speed in December.
  • Government can’t champion a digital economy with subpar internet speeds and by enforcing the most internet shutdowns in the world.
  • Digital is supposed to empower people while internet shutdowns have an undemocratic feel.

Unquiet waters | Telegraph

  • India and Japan are making significant inroads into the region
  • US policy towards Asia by the Joe Biden administration

  • Beijing has a proprietorial attitude towards Southeast Asia.
  • Although it may not want to exert direct control over the region, it does not welcome foreign influence or interference.
  • China’s foreign minister, Wang Yi, is heading Beijing’s blitz in the region: he recently made a critical visit sometime ago to key parts of Asean — Myanmar, Indonesia, Brunei and the Philippines — on his way back from an important tour of Africa.
  • This trip follows his visit three months ago to the other countries in the regional bloc: Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. Noticeably, he is yet to visit Vietnam as part of this surge.

  • Wang Yi promised a gift of 300,000 doses of China’s CoronaVac vaccine.
  • China’s donation came on the heels of Myanmar’s deal with India to buy some 30 million doses of an Indian-produced vaccine.
  • The first batch of 1.5 million doses arrived in Myanmar recently. Indian officials say that this consignment is, in fact, a donation in the spirit of mutual cooperation under the Indian government’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ and ‘Act East’ policies.
  • Biden administration may resume US-Myanmar military cooperation.
  • Beijing has already secured the most important shipping base in Western Myanmar — Kyaukphyu in northern Rakhine — which would give China unfettered access to the Indian Ocean besides offering a significant trading route linking it to South Asia and the Middle East.
  • India and Myanmar are working on opening the Sittwe port in the Rakhine, north of Kyaukphyu, in the next few months.
  • Kaladan multi-modal transit transport project - gateway to Southeast Asia
  • In Bangladesh, Japan is building the Matarbari deep-sea port
