Iran’s military drills in Persian Gulf

Date: 28 December 2021 Tags: Miscellaneous

Iran has conducted military drills in the Persian Gulf region, sending a stern warning to its adversaries.

From the past few weeks, tensions have been building between Iran and Israel. This comes at a time when efforts are being made to revive Iran Nuclear deal.

The war games included firing ballistic and cruise missiles. One of the target resembled Israel’s Dimona nuclear reactor.

Reasons for the drill

  • Iran has been facing concerns over possible plans by Israel to attack Iranian nuclear sites, which has taken place previously as well.

  • The recent diplomatic truce between Israel and Gulf countries has further fuelled Iran’s fears. The alliance has posed formidable challenge to Iran’s monopoly in the region.

Geopolitical concern

  • Israel has been opposing the move by the west to revive Iran Nuclear deal as it gives legitimacy to Iran’s nuclear programme. Iran may use this opportunity to strengthen its hold over Lebanon and Palestine through its proxies.

  • Israel worries that nuclear-armed Iran will be the biggest threat to its existence in coming years. A nuclear war cannot be ruled out in the future.

Nuclear race in middle-east

  • Israel is believed to be the only country to possess nuclear weapons technology in middle-east. Iran has been trying hard to become nuclear power from the past few decades but without much success.

  • Iran has been saying that its programme is strictly civilian but the west has enough knowledge of its intentions to develop a weapon.

Persian Gulf

  • The Persian Gulf is a marginal sea located in the North Indian Ocean. It connects the Arabian Sea through a narrow Strait of Hormuz.

  • Countries bordering Persian Gulf include Saudi Arabia, Iran, UAE, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and Iraq. The Gulf has enormous petroleum deposits.

Iran Nuclear deal

  • The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), commonly known as Iran nuclear deal is a treaty between Iran and P5+1.

  • Under the treaty, the economic sanctions on Iran will be lifted in response to Iran limiting its nuclear programme and allowing inspections by international community.
