81st raising day of country's largest paramilitary force-Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was observed on July 27, 2019. On this day in 1939, CRPF had come into existence as the Crown Representative's Police. It was renamed to its present nomenclature after enactment of the CRPF Act on December 28, 1949.
About Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)
- It functions under Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). It was established in 1939, under Crown Representative’s Police and was made statutory force after independence after enactment of CRPF Act, 1949. It has been the lead force in dealing with the militancy in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), fighting the Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) and insurgency in Northeast India.
- Mandate: Enable government to maintain rule of law, public order and internal security effectively and efficiently, preserve national integrity and promote social harmony and development by upholding supremacy of the Constitution.
- Organizational Strength: It has 246 battalions (1 battalion comprises around 1,000 personnel), including 208 executive battalions, six women battalions, 15 Rapid Action Force (anti-riots) battalions, 10 CoBRA (specialised anti-Naxala) battalions. It has five signal battalions, one Special Duty Group, one Parliament Duty Group, 43 Group Centres, 20 training institutions, four composite hospitals of 100 bed and 17 composite hospitals of 50 bed. It is considered to be World's largest Paramilitary Force.
